Unlikely At Southern Methodist
By Harold V. Ratliff
Associated Press Sports Writer
There has been talk of South
ern Methodist University discon
tinuing football because insuffici
ent funds are being taken in at the
gate to finance the athletic pro
gram.
The reason has been a losing
team for three straight years. In
1960 the team didn’t win a game.
It won very few the next -two
seasons. But even Southern Metho
dist didn’t expect big crowds to
come out.
Last year there was a curtail
ment in athletic scholarships. It
was hinted that there would be no
more in any of the spring sports.
It develops, however, that some
scholarships were given in all of
the sports except baseball.
In the case of baseball, it was
n’t primarily an economy move but
because SMU was ired at pro
fessional baseball for signing boys
on whom considerable money had
been spent. Now, there was no
scholarships in baseball. The team
is playing accordingly.
BUT THERE are betwneen 140
and 150 scholarships on the Hill
top, with some 90 in football, 18
in basketball and the remainder
in track, golf; tennis and swim
ming. The latter sport is being
pretty well taken care of. The rea
son is obvious. SMU is doing
better in swimming than any oth
er sport.
Now what does SMU have with
which to pay the $224,000 for the
scholarships — an athletic schol
arship at the Dallas university
costs about $1,600 per year.
A checkup on athletic income
shows SMU isn’t doing nearly so
badly as pictured. The Methodists
drew about 125,000 for six home
games. They also played before
160,000 on the road. Thus SMU
shares 50-50 in the gate receipts
from 285,000 admissions. Figuring
about $3.00 per admission, it can
be seen that the SMU income will

SMU RECEIVED from television
of over $500,000 in athletics for
It played in one of the regional
telecasts and it shared in national
television of the Texas-A&M game.
Southern Methodist had income
of over $500,000 in athletics for
the year, including basketball. The
other sports bring in nothing.
This isn’t enough to pay all the
expenses of the athletic depart-
since the average in the Southwest
Conference appears to be around
$600,000 a year. But it is a lot
closer than anybody thought.
And they’re eyeing the future
with optimism at SMU. There’ll
be a fine nucleus from this year’s
surprisingly good team and one of
SMU y s best freshman teams is
coming up. Boys like Mac White,
Richard Stark, Jim Taylor and
tackle Doug January will give
the varsity a big boost.
SMU HAD a much better team
than anybody had hoped for. It
could have won the conference
championship by scoring about 20
more points. It lost to Texas by
six, to Baylor by four, to A&M
by five, to Arkansas by two. It
beat Rice and Texas Tech to make
an early threat for the title.
Holds Hig!i Series
Tony Servello, Aggie Match team captain, holds the high
series in the T.I.B.C. of 652 and paces the league in average
with a 192. Servello will be leading the Cadets in San An
tonio Saturday in quest of a record fourth straight title.
