Ex - Ag Baseballer
May Make Majors
According- to Houston Colt offi
cials, one of the biggest finds of
the current Arizona. Winter League
is Cliff Davis, a former Aggie
baseballer from Corpus Christi.
The Texan has been sensational
since he switched from the out
field to the mound.
He is currently the top pitcher
in the league with a 5-0 record and
an earned run average of only 1.59
in 42 innings.
AFTER HITTING just .220 for
Jacksonville, Fla., in 1961, Coach
Turn Harris suggested he test his
strong throwing arm on the mound.
Davis proved a natural for the
new spot. He pitched for the Mo
desto, Calif., Class C farm club
and finished second in the league
in strike outs with 219 in 187 inn
ings. He had a 12-11 record.
Davis has developed the slip
pitch, more or less a new type
change-up invented by Houston’s
Paul Richards, and also has a fine

“He’s definitely one of the most
promising pitchers in our system
and has a fine chance to go all
the way to the top,” reports Lou
Fitzgerald, manager of the Colt
.45 rookie squad.
Davis is remembered around Cor
pus Christi for lettering in four
sports at Tuloso-Midway. He ac
quired 16 letters during his high
school career and made all-district
before graduating in 1957.
He played baseball for four
years at A&M, plus making the
track team, and was graduated
from here in 1961.
A FEW WEEKS later, after
making the All-Southwest Confer
ence baseball team, he signed with
the Colts and was sent to Jackson
ville, then to the Houston Buffs.
His Louisville Slugger sent no
chills down the spines of opposing
pitchers so he switched to the
mound with remarkable and fast
success.
“I’ve learned a lot here in the
rookie league. For example, my
5-0 record this fall is lax-gely due
to correcting one fault I had last
summer—that was, dropping my
shoulder too much in making my
delivex-y. Paul Richards and Frank
Gabler of the Colts and Ray Day-
beck and Fred Hatfield, of Modes
to, were also a big help to me.
Davis, wTiose father works for
Somico, in Corpus Christi, will re
turn to Texas after the rookie
season ends Dec. 9.
He has a fine chance to be as
signed to Oklahoma City, a AAA
club, next spring and could be in
the majors before the 1963 season
is over.
