THE BATTALION
Mike Clark Draws Praise
As ‘Back Of The Week’
By VAN CONNER
Battalion Sports Editor
It is not often when a football
player can be named as a stand
out lineman and back during his
career, much less during a single
season. But such is the case with
A&M’s field goal kicker and lead
ing scorer Mike Clark.
After his two three-pointers that
beat Baylor, 6-3, The Dallas Morn
ing News named the Longview
senior a “lineman of the week.”
And this week we see that his two
boots against SMU have earned a
place on that paper’s “back of the
week” list.
FOR AN END who sees action
only on kickoffs, extra point tries
and field goal attempts, we’d say
that this is quite an accomplish
ment. But then, those lads who
figure most in their team’s win
ning are the ones usually seen on
the lists.
When you think of it that way,
it’s not hard to see why Clark
deserves the mention. Three of his
field goals have meant the differ
ence in two grid clashes this sea
son. His second of the season, a
28-yarder, tied up the Baylbr game
with 11 minutes left. With less
than a minute left “The Toe” put
a 42-yard three-pointer through to
win the game.
Against SMU Clark kicked a
30-yarder to put the Ags ahead,
9-7, and then added a 37-yard job
for good measure.
Through eight games the 6-1,
200-pounder has five field goals,
counting those mentioned above
and the three points he netted in
a losing cause against Houston.
Add to that the one he kicked
against Tech last year and big
Mike has broken the career record
set by Joel Hunt (1925-26-27) and
John Ballentine (1945-46-47).
CLARK IS two field goals ahead
of Hunt and Randy Sims (1959) to
set another season record. He has
also matched the single game
totals of Hunt (A&M vs. TCU,
1926).
Is it any wonder that the Bryan-
College Station area radio stations
have been doing a big business
spinning the standby, “I Get a
Kick Out of You,” dedicated to
some guy named Mike ?
And Clark kicks with neither a
bare foot nor a souare-toed shoe.
Just plain old conventional Mike,
they call him He keeps his head
down, locks the m 'lit ankle and
swings through from the knee. It
pays off too.
Melvin Simmons, an Aggie
tackle who has beer; named to the
“lineman of the week” list himself,
claims he saw both of Clark’s field
goals against the Mustangs. “That
first one split the very middle of
the uprights,” he said. “That sec
ond one, it was real close to not
being good.”
“That second one” was kicked
from the SMU 27 into an 18-mph
wind. It seemed to hover for a
moment between the poles, then
fell through on the right side for
three counters.
DRYSDALE HAS AN EDGE
CINCINNATI <7P) — Since 1918
there have been 140 National
League 20-game winners but none
in recent years has had Don
Drysdale’s adge in quest of the
30-win mark.
Dodger star Drysdale won his
20th game on Aug. 3. The last
National League hurler to reach
that mark so early in a season
was Jim (Hippo) Vaughn of the
Cubs. In 1918 he won his 20th
game on Aug. 1. Dizzy Dean won
30 in 1934 but that year he won
his 20th decision on Aug. 7.
