About Texas Independents

Texas probably has more foot
ball independents than any other
state in the nation. Naturally,
Texas wouldn’t have anything to
do with it if it couldn’t have the
most.
But the point is that a dozen
colleges are playing an aimless
schedule and something should be
done about it. They should have
the privilege of playing for some
thing.
Once virtually all of Texas’ col
leges were in conferences. Thei’e
were the Southwest Conference,
the Missouri Valley Conference,
the Texas Conference, the Lone
Star .ConT^Jt’ence, the Border Con-

Today there are only the Lone
Star Conference, Missouri Valley
Conference and the Southwest Con
ference. The Texas Conference,
the Gulf Coast Conference, the
Border Conference and the others
have passed to the limbo of the
forgotten. Only one school—North
Texas State—is a member of the
Missouri Valley. It’s a good bet
that North Texas would enter
some good conference in Texas if
it came along.
THE INDEPENDENTS playing
in Texas this year are Houston,
West Texas State, Texas Western,
Austin College, Abilene Christian,
McMurry, Trinity, Texas Lutheran,
Arlington State, Tarleton State,
Austin College and Corpus Christi.
Houston quit the Missouri Val
ley Conference several years ago
and has been an independent look
ing for a conference ever since.
Houston would like to be in the
Southwest Conference and would
take the Southeastern if the
Southwest never is available.
Houston is big enough and has
an adequate program to make it
worthy of membership in the
Southwest Conference. However,
it may never make it since Rice,
another Houston school, is a char
ter member and obviously would
n’t want Houston in the league
because of the local competition
that would ensue. Rice also would
object to playing Houston on
grounds it might become too hot
a rivalry.
West Texas State and Texas
Western eventually should wind
up in the new conference that Ari
zona and Arizona State quit the
Border Conference to get into—
the Western Athletic Conference.
AUSTIN COLLEGE probably
wouldn’t want in a conference un
less it was one that included only
colleges that do not give athletic
scholarships and pride themselves
on playing only the boys who come
to school primarily for an educa
tion and pay their way while there.
Then, that leaves Abilene Chris
tian, McMurry, Trinity, Texas Lu
theran, Arlington State, Hardin-
Simmons, Tarleton State and pos
sibly Corpus Christi. The latter
would have to put more emphasis
on football than it now does in
order to compete. Hardin-Sim-
mons might still have an idea of
getting into a conference like the
Western or of just going on as
an independent.
Most of the Texas colleges play
each other. In one instance there
is a round-robin among five of
them.
Why not organize a conference
and when they play each other
it would be playing for something
instead of just having a football
team because it’s more or less cus
tomary.
A CONFERENCE encompassing
Abilene Christian, Hardin-Sim-
mons, McMurry, Trinity, Texas Lu
theran, Arlington State and Tarle
ton State should be a very good
one. And it ought to double the
crowds at least, so that the schools
might make enough at the gate to
pay expenses.
Texas 28, SMU 7; the Steers
needn’t be as impressed with the
Mustangs as everybody thinks.
TEXAS TECH 3, Rice 0; it’s
about time for the Raiders and
Rice’s luck is about worn thin.
TCU 21, Baylor 14; contrary to
the statistics, the Frogs can move
the ball better than the Bears
(against the Bears, at any rate.)
Wyoming 20, Air Force 13; the
Cowboys have corrected early-
season troubles and should finish
out in fine style.
Ohio State 34, Iowa 20; the poor
Hawkeyes are going to be trying
so hard, too.
Navy 21, Notre Dame 18; it’s the
Midshipmen who might explode.
LSU 14, Mississippi 6; it ought
to take more than the Rebels to
get through the Tiger defense.
Auburn 19, Florida 12; the Ti
gers like that unbeaten slate too
much to let the determined Gators
get revenge for last year.
Brigham Young 26, New Mex
ico 14; the Cougars should get
their revenge for last year.
Oregon 17, Stanford 6; the
Ducks don’t care if the Indians did
beat Washington.
