Bell Communicatioii Satellite
Scientist Will Speak Here
CHS To Choose
Dr. John R. Pierce of Bell Tele
phone Laboratories and Telstar
fame will be one of the main speak
ers at the A&M Century Study
Convocation Nov. 16.
The scientist will discuss “Space
Communication” during the School
of Engineering portion of the over
all convocation program.
Pierce’s name is closely con
nected with Telstar, the communi
cation satellite developed by the
American Telephone and Telegraph
Company. Bell Telephone Laboi’a-
tories are affiliated with AT&T.
The scientist was the first in this
country to suggest use of space
satellites for communications and
to analyze designs of such a sys
tem.
He was horn at Des Moines
Iowa, and educated at the Califor
nia Institute of Technology.
Pierce joined Bell Telephone La
boratories in 1936 and became di
rector of electronic research in
1952 and director of research in
electronics communications in 1955.
Morning - sessions of the convo
cation include open house and
speakers in the schools of engineer
ing, agriculture, arts and sciences
and veterinary medicine.
A luncheon will honor members
of the Century Council.

rent GOP members.

dozen hotly contested races be

would not be unexpected.
However, Democrats hold the
upper hand in a big majority of
the 13 contested races in the 31-
seat Senate and the 84 contests
for the 84 seats in the 150-member
House.
“I think we’ll get a minimum
of 10 seats in the House, including
the two present Republicans up
for re-election, plus maybe one
senator,” said Tad Smith, acting
state GOP chairman.
“WE ARE confident of a com
plete slate of Democratic legisla
tors,” said Clyde Johnson, execu
tive director of the state Demo
cratic headquarters. “That in
