Keese will receive the $560 Met ropolitan Life Award of Merit for research in accident prevention for 1962. The A&M men are being hon ored fojr their research in a free way traffic accident analysis and safety study. Mullins was the principal investigator who con ducted the study with Keese, exec utive officer of the Texas Trans portation Institute. The award will be presented at the general session of the traffic conference as part of the National Safety Congress. Mullins will ac cept the award from Dr. George M. Wheatley, third vice president of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Notifying Mullins and Keese of the forthcoming award was How ard Pyle, president of the National Safety Council. “Your very thorough and com prehensive work on the freeway traffic accident anlysis and safety study is an outstanding contribu tion to traffic safety and to acci dent pi’evention and reduction,” Pyle said. “I feel certain that in the years to come, the effects and application of your work will be come increasingly valuable.” “On behalf of the National Safe ty Council,” Pyle continued, “may we express our sincere gratitude for the work that you and Profes sor Keese have done.” The study by Mullins and Keese was initiated in 1958 by the Texas Transportation Institute under sponsorship of the Automotive Safety Foundation. Its purpose was to determine the possible cor relations between freeway acci dents and specific geometric de sign features on urban freeways. They also investigated methods of improving accident reporting by traffic enforcement officials. The study considered some 10,- 000 accident reports on 54 miles of freeways in the five largest Texas citi.es and covered from two to five years of data. ★★★ The history faculty is represent ed by articles appearing in the October, 1962, issue of the “South- western Historical Quarterly,” publication of the Texas State His torical Association. Di*. Thomas L. Miller, associate professor of history, is author of “Texas Bounty Land Grants, 1835- 1888.” He has written extensively on the land system of Texas. In this latest article, Miller considers the amount of land promised to soldiers in advance of their mili tary service in Texas. The legis lative history of the bounty sys tem in Texas and the issuance of land titles are traced. Also appearing in the current issue of the quarterly is the diary of Lewis Harvie Blair, published as “Lewis Harvie Blair: Texas Travels, 1851-1855.” Dr. Charles E. Wynes, while an assistant pro fessor of history here, edited the material. The article was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Fund for Organized Research of A&M for the summer of 1961. Wynes in September became an assistant professor in the Depart ment of History at the University of Georgia. LUNCHES from 75^f on . . . That can’t be beat!
