Some 95 engineers architects and builders from 19 nations will pre sent papers at the conference. Also attending from A&M will be Ben Evans, co-ordinator for the TEES architectural research group. Marsh’s paper discusses the con struction of thin shell structures that eliminate necessity of conven tional form work. His project in cluded laying out a reinforced pat tern in a projected plan. By lift ing and warping the reinforced pattern, a reinforced skeletal structure is developed upon which a covering material may be ap plied. Ellis ’37 Rhodes Competition Opens Any A&M student desiring to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship must do so before Oct. 10, it was announced Wednesday. Dr. R. H. Ballinger of the Department of English is the college representa tive for the scholarships. A long and involved selection procedure as well as stringent per sonal and academic qualifications must be met by applicants. A stu dent here also must be recommend ed by President Earl Rudder to state selection committee. This committee, which will meet Dec. 12, will nominate two candi dates to the district selection com mittee. Four winners will be chosen from this district, which also includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Personal qualifications are that a student be a male, unmarried and between 18 and 24. At least jun ior standing in some degree-grant ing university is required. No restriction is placed upon a Rhodes scholar’s choice of study. All studies are taken at the Uni versity of Oxford in England. Subjects which can be exclusive ly studied include literae human- iores, mathematics, physics, chem istry, animal physiology, zoology, biochemistry, botany, geology, en gineering science, science of me tals, geography, agriculture, juris prudence, modern history, theology, oriental subjects, English langu age and literature, philosophy-po litics-economics, psychology-philo sophy-physiology, modern langu ages forestry and music. According to the scholarship bro chure “quality of both character and intellect is the most important requirements for a Rhodes schol arship.” There have been only two pre vious A&M Rhodes scholars. Char les W. Thomas, ’22, is now head of the Department of Engineering at New York State Teachers Col lege, and Jack E. Brooks, ’47, is now on the technical staff of Ramo- Woolridge Corp.
