Dr. John Q. Anderson, a mem
ber of the A&M faculty since
1953, has been named head of the
Department of English, Dr. Frank
W. R. Hubert, Dean of Arts and
Sciences, has announced.
An English professor noted for
his research and writings in the
field of American Folklore, Ander
son assumed his new academic
post Sept. 1.
He succeeds Dr. Stewart S. Mor
gan, department head since 1952,
who is retiring - to modified teach
ing duties. Morgan has been on
the A&M faculty since 1921.
“Anderson effectively combines
the two essential qualities for aca
demic leadership in college and
university cii-cles,” Hubert said.
“His teaching record is outstand
ing. In 1961 he received the Dis
tinguished Service Award for
teaching upon the selection by a
college-wide faculty committee.
“His contributions to the field
of scholarship are already note
worthy and his work stands as'an
inspiration to all of us. He is a
real pace setter for scholarship
and teaching- effectiveness.”
A native of Wheeler, Tex., An
derson earned his A.B. degree in
1939 at Oklahoma State. He re
ceived his M.A. degree at Louisi
ana State University in 1948 and
his Ph.D. at the University of
North Carolina in 1952.
He joined the A&M faculty in
1953.

Tom D. Cherry, former manage
ment controls director of Trans
World Airlines in New York, has
been named Director of Business
Affairs for A&M.
In his new position, Cherry will
be responsible for the overall busi
ness affairs of the college. As
such, his duties will involve per
sonnel policies, budgets and other
fiscal affairs.
He wall serve on the academic
council, research council and exec
utive committee of the college.
The new administrative official
has experience in banking, manu
facturing, college teaching, college
business management and airline
management controls. He has
served on various committees of
both state and federal agencies.
A native of New Waverly, Tex.,
and a former A&M faculty mem
ber, Cherry received his bachelor’s
degree from Sam Houston State
College and his master’s from
A&M. Pie has done doctoral work
at the University of Texas and
Columbia University.
Following graduation from Sam
Houston in 1932, Cherry served as
business manager of the Hunts
ville school. He joined the eco
nomics faculty here in 1938 and
became director of economic re
search with the Texas Engineering
Experiment Station in 1941.
From 1943-45, Cherry was Di
rector of Business Controls for the
A. O. Smith Corp. in Houston. He
joined TWA in 1945 as Director of
Sales Research at Kansas City and
moved in 1949 with the transfer
of the executive offices to New
York.

been with the A&M System for a
year, will fill the position vacated
by R. Henderson Shuffler, who has
resigned to accept a position with
the University of Texas as head
of the new Texana Program which
deals with the history and culture
of the state.
A native of Connecticut, Du
Beau did his undergraduate work
in bacteriology and chemistry at
the University of Connecticut and
also received his Bachelor of Jour
nalism and Master of Arts degrees
from the University of Missouri.
He has been an editor in the
Institutional Publicity Department
of the General Electric Co., Sche
nectady, N.Y., and a reporter and
columnist for both the Richmond
(Va.) News Leader and The New
York Times.
After the war, he was with the
Memphis (Tenn.) Press - Scimitar
for five years, as copy editor and
later as financial editor.
Prior to joining the staff of the
A&M System in 1961, he served
for 6V2 years as Southwest Editor
for Business Week Magazine,
headquartered in Houston.

Dr. Rudolf J. Freund of the
Virginia Polytechnic Institute has
assumed the duties of associate
director of the new Graduate In
stitute of Statistics.
A director for the new program
will be appointed later in the
school year, according to Graduate
Dean Wayne C. Hall.
The Master of Science and Doc
tor of Philosophy degrees in sta
tistics will be offered in the new
program, approved just this sum
mer by the Texas Commission on
Higher Education.
A&M long has offered both un
dergraduate and graduate work in
statistics, which is an applied
mathematical science. The new
degree programs and related plans
will bring together all such work.
Six departments presently offer-
courses in statistics.
The new institute will provide
consultation with other depart
ments on _ teaching and research
problems involving the design of
experiments and the interpretation
of data.
Research programs in the field
of applied statistics also will be
initiated by the new institute.
The working relationship be
tween the institute and the Data
Processing Center is expected to
be close. The Texas Commission
on Higher Education had previ
ously authorized the Master of
Science degree program in com
puter science at A&M. The two
programs will be mutually bene
ficial and complementary.

Jim Lindsey of Midland has
taken over the post here of direc
tor of college information and stu
dent publications.
A 20-year veteran of Texas
newspapers, Lindsey resigned as
managing editor of the Midland
Reporter-Telegram to take the po
sition.
He also resigned as a member
of the Texas Tech board of direc
tors, where he had served six
years.
A Texas Tech journalism gradu
ate, Lindsey edited the student
newspaper at the Lubbock college
for two years. During his second
year as editor, the semi-weekly
won all-American honors in na
tional competition judged by
newspaper executives and journal
ism professors.
A native of Grayson County, he
graduated from Whitewright High
School with salutatorian honors.
He received a scholarship to Tex
as Tech.
After college, he was managing
editor of the San Angelo Stand
ard-Times and assistant managing
editor of the San Antonio Express
before moving to Midland in 1952.
Doyle Gougler has been serving
as acting director of college in
formation and student publications
since the death of L. A. Duewall,
May 2.

Clark C. Munroe, formerly of
Wichita Falls, has been appointed
to the newly-created post of di
rector of personnel by Tom D.
Cherry, director of business affairs.
Munroe was formerly district
traffic superintendent at Wichita
Falls for Southwestern Bell Tele
phone Co.
Munroe graduated from A&M in
1950 with a major in business
administration, and is the author
of numerous articles in profession
al jouraals.
His assignments prior to accept
ing the post here include a broad
range of personnel, administrative
and technical activities. He had
been with Southwestern Bell since
1954.
Munroe served in the Navy as an
enlisted man following graduation
from Alamo Heights High School,
San Antonio, in 1943, and as an
Army officer following graduation
from A&M. He is a captain in the
U. S. Army Reserve and holds the
Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster,
the Purple Heart, the Presidential
Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Clust
er and the Republic of Korea’s Dis
tinguished Service Medal.
Munroe currently serves as one
of two class agents for the Class
of 1950.
