DONALD DELIZ A visit to Montmartre really gives you a varied combination of feelings about Paris. I visited at dusk on a borrowed Vespa motor scooter, and as we ap proached Place Pigalle, it was getting ready for its wild eve ning’s merriment. This entire square is lined with night clubs, strip shows and ladies of the evening. I whizzed by it rather fast, for one doesn’t have to spend money to come to Paris for that—at least I tell myself this. The outstanding thing at Place Pigalle is the Moulin Rouge. That was the club made famous by the dwarfed artist Toulouse- Latrec who made their posters in the ‘gay Nineties’, advertising their Can-Can dancers. But nowadays only the name remains, and it is a dance hall like all the others with twist and rock and roll music coming out of it. The same songs we have in the good old U.S. of A., but the lyrics are in French. ing down so I thought that they were closing. I enjoyed the view from the terrace at half way, but when I got to the top, I felt so tired that I couldn’t enjoy the fuy view. It was then that I felt like a martyr myself, for I saw the lit tle funicular railway that I could have taken on the way up. That’s why everyone was coming down the steps. As a rule, you take the funicular up and walk down. But the little railway is cleverly concealed in bushes and trees and is off to one side. At the top of the hill, one can also see the little church of St. Pierre which all the Parisians of this section go to instead of the Sacre Coeur. St. Pierre is au thentic to them. It was built in the Middle Ages and it is where the Jesuit movement began in France. To them, Sacre Coeur is a tourist attraction. CHURCHES OLD I was looking for the Mont martre of artists and picturesque little streets like those in the Maurice Utrillo paintings, so I went up to the top of the hill above Place Pigalles amuse ments. There is a church called Sacre Coeur there that is built in the Byzantine style. It is pure white and it was built in 1873, which is very new for any church here. They usually date back two or three hundred years. The out landish towers of the Sacre Coeur jar the Parisians and they don’t like them too much. They talk about it like we talk about Bagley Hall, going down. The name of the section of Montmartre because it is a mount upon which some saints in the middle ages were mar tyred. I climbed the hill by way of the thousand steps and I no ticed a great many people com- UTRILLO FOUND As you wander around the top of the hill, there are many of those little streets, stairways and white facaded houses that you see in the Maurice Utrillo paint ings. I had found Maurice at last! Then a little street took me to the Place de Tertre which means the square of the hilltop. It is here that the local artists sell their paintings and we see a lot of poor art going into tourist’s hands for a lot of money. It is easy to overlook this fact since the place is really very charming with its little cafes and bakeries. It was time to descend the hill by them, and ride my motor- scooter back to its owner, but at least I had seen the Paris of the artists. A little commercial ized for the summer for the tourists. However, it was unmistakably the Paris of Utrillo because one could see all those little white houses stacked on the hillside with their ochre-white walls breathing forth the secrets of those living within them. Continuous, low-intensity irra diation may be less harmful to mammals than previously be lieved, experiments here indicate. Two A&M radiation biologists will tell results of their research Aug. 5-11 at the Second Inter- natioial Congress on Radiation Research at Harrowgate-Y ork- shire, England. Dr. Sidney O. Brown and Dr. George Krise will give papers at the international meeting on their long term investigations of “hematological, reproductive and histopathological effects” of low- dose, prolonged gamma radiation of white rats and mice. Information gained by their re search is basic to survival of space travelers—who may be ex posed to similar irradiation—and to those living in “radiation fringe areas,” should nuclear warfare occur. Their research tends to show that low-level radiation, even over a long period, does not alter appreciably any of the normal bodily processe s—except for these notable exceptions: male rats became sterile after expo sure to more than 35,000 milli- roentgens each week for more than a month. Females, under these condi tions, did not produce satisfac tory fifth and sixth litters. Rats maintained for nine generations in a radiation field of 14,000 milliroentgens each week showed no demonstrable changes in morphology or reproductive capacity. As a point of reference, the human population today is sub jected to about two milliroent gens per week as a result of “fallout” in the atmosphere caused by nuclear explosions. Their research has been con ducted for the Office of Surgeon General, U.S. Ax-my, at the Ra diation Biology Laboratory of the Texas Engineering Experi ment Station here. Because this basic research is designed for application on work with higher mammals, the x*e- sults of the low-intensity radia tion reseai’ch shows a need for continuing studies. “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renanlt-Peugeot & British Motor Can ^ Sales—Parts—Service | “We Service All Foreign Cars”; ;1416 Texas Ave. TA 2-4617; TV-Radio-Hi Service & Repaii GILS RADIO S TA 2-0826 2405 S,I SOSOLIK T. Dr. Paul Hensarling, depart ment head and class instructor, said 11 students are participating in the project. Purpose of the handbook is to improve school and community relations. ROBBIE D. GODWIN ..EDITOR Class members are teachers, most of them preparing for ad ministrative positions in public schools. Each student will re ceive a handbook to take with him when he returns to his reg ular school position this fall. “It is hoped that the handbook will seiwe as a guide for school systems to interpret educational programs to the communities,” Hensaxding said. The publications is organized around the various media for communication with the public, he said. Principal media are news papers, television, radio, public speaking and personal contact, school-prepared brochures, news letters, special activities, lay citizen committees, the board of “STORK — AWAITING”? .SHOP FOR YOUR COMPLETE MATERNITY WARDROBE AT JOYCE’S 608 S.
