o
Roy C. “Beau” Bell, former
American League All Star base
ball player, and Aggie baseball
coach, who now works for the
B&U department recently received
an invitation to the 25th annual
reunion of the 1937 American
League All Star Team.
Bell, an A&M graduate, class of
’31, was captain of the baseball
team his senior year.
“That was the first year the
Aggies had ever won a baseball
conference championship,” said
Bell.
After graduating, he joined the
Texas League, playing outfield
and occasionally first base.
From the Texas League, “Beau”
joined the St. Louis Browns in
1935. He also played for the De
troit Tigers and Cleveland In
dians.
Leading the entire league in
base hits in 1937, Bell was named
to the American League All Star
Team to play in the annual League
All Stars Game. The outstanding
players in the American League
were pitted against the outstand
ing players of the National League
in this traditional game, which
wgs played in New York’s Yankee
Stadium.
Fellow players in the memora
ble ^'ame were s u,c h immortal
baseball names as Joe DiMaggio,
Loik Gehrig, Bill Dickey, and Diz
zy Derm.
“It was in this- i^knle that Dizzy
received the injury which was to
affect his playing so badly,” said
Bell. “He was struck by a fast
ball and has claimed that his pitch
ing has never been the same,” he
said.
“Beau” Bell was coach of the
Aggie baseball team from 1951 to
1958. ( In 1951, the Aggies tied TU
for the SWC championship, and
in 1955, won it outright with a 20-
7-0 season record.
During this period at A&M, he
also found time to attend classes
and complete requirements for the
degree of Master of Administra
tive Education.
At the reunion, July 28, Bell will
witness and parii-cipate-Jn several
activities, including the induction
of 4 baseball gi’eats, Bill McKech-
nie, Edd Roush, Bob Feller, and
Jackie Robinson, into the Baseball
Hall of Fame.
A short two or three inning
game will be played in Yankee
