C. Gaines, head of the Department of Entomology at A&M, has been awarded an honor ary membership in the Texas Pest Control Association in recognition of his individual and the College’s assistance to the industry. Presentation of the honorary membership and plaque was made by Jack Plummer of Galveston, president of the state association, during opening ceremonies of the sixteenth annual Pest Control Operators Short Course on the A&M campus. The Department of Entomology sponsors the short course. A surprised Dr. Gaines accepted the plaque, and in ex pressing thanks stressed the role of the Department of Entomology faculty. Mohr Resigns To Take Post At Kentucky Dr. Hubert C. Mohr, associate professor of horticulture in the Department of Soil and Crop Sci ences, will resign July 15 to become head of the Department of Horti culture, University of Kentucky, at Lexington. Since first employed by A&M in 1946, Mohr has been connected with the departments of biology, plant physiology and pathology and horticulture. More than 130 persons from all sections of Texas registered on June 21, opening day of the two- day short course. The registra tion set a new attendance mark for the short course. The program for the 1962 short course included several talks on subjects of interest to operators and employees of pest control firms. Gaines, a native Texan, joined the A&M faculty in 1942 and has served since World War II as a professor. He was named head of the department 10 years ago. & Atomic Energy Grant Received A g-rant of $17,800 has been made to the A&M chemistry de partment by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The grant will be used to eqiup a radiochemistry laboratory for teaching and research by Dr. Fred Sicilio, associate professor of chemistry. The AEG also made a grant to $10,505 to the department of bio chemistry and nutrition and the department of plant physiology and pathology for more labora tory equipment. THE BATTALTON Thursday, June 28, 1962 College Station, Texas Page 3 VETS (Continued From Page 1) tioned. Another is that the tri mester plaui leaves the student less time foir summer employment. Dean Price was quick to point out, however, that a student could withdraw from school and work a full year, if necessary. Also stu dent expenses in college will be reduced by one year. Greatest advantage to the new approach will be more classroom exposure in fewer calendar years. Other advantages: One: The public receives an additional year of service from each student grad uated without additional invest ment on the part of either. Two: The trimester plan pro vides a means for increased stu dent enrollment to alleviate an expected national shortage of trained veterinary personnel. (Currently the school has a limit ed enrollment of 64.) GI Students Due To Report All students receiving benefits under any G.I. Bills who will not attend the second summer term are requested to report to the Vet eran’s Advisor before leaving the campus. Those who will attend both terms will report to sign for July pay at the end of the month. Veterinary schools in the United States produce approximately 1,- 000 graduates annually. A con gressional study recently showed the nation will need 47,000 veteri- nai’ians by 1980, which is an addi tional 31,000 and somewhat above the present production rate. Three: Clinical cases submitted to the Veterinary Hospital during the summer will be used in teach ing and research by students. Some of these cases are seasonal. Four: The trimester plan will give greater use of classroom and laboratory facilities and teaching equipment. Five: Because of the reduced number of years, more senior vet erinary students will be attracted to post-doctoral work and more superior high school students will probably be attracted to the pro fessional curriculum. Six: Additional time will be provided for teachers to engage in uninterruptable research. SERVING BRYAN and COLLEGE STATION ^ SAM HOUSTON ZEPHYR Lv. N. Zulch 10:03 a.m. 12:47 p.m. Ar. Dallas Lv. N.
