STICK
DEODORANT
A barber who has shaved the
heads of four college presidents
and Texas governors is retiring
after 43 years of clipping hair.
William H. Freiberger will hang
up his clippers May 31 after serv
ing as manager of the Memorial
Student Center barber shop since
the building was opened in 1950.
His replacement will be Edwin
L. Novosad, a co-worker and for
mer College Station barber. Novo-
sad also joined the MS£ s£aff in
1950.
I Freiberger, born . in Illinois in
lp93, came to Texas five years
later and settled in Greenville,
where he attended public schools.
A veteran of World War I, he
became a barber in 1919 in Sul
phur Springs. Four years later,
he moved to Texarkana to barber
for 13 years. In 1936 he purchased
a shop in Hooks, near Texarkana,
and remained there for four years
before moving to College Station.
Freiberger likes to talk about
s w u t_ t o N

the changes that have taken place
in the barber shop work during
his hair clipping days.
“When I first started," Frei
berger recalled with a grin, “we
cut hair with shears and shaved
the necks all the way around.”
The whole business was revolu
tionized with the advent of clip
pers in the early 1920’s, he point
ed out. “But basically, the hair
styles didn’t change much until
the crew cut and duck tails of the
1950’s. During the depression,
thpugh, we cut hair pretty close,”
Freiberger commented.
Shaving is a lost art, he said.
Hot and cold running water in.
the homes and better shaving
equipment are the reasons given
by Freiberger for the decline in
customer requests for removal of
five o’clock shadows.
“We only get one or two ch's-
tomers a week asking for shaves,”
he said.
Freiberger lists some of his
more prominent customers as for
mer governors Pat Neff and Jim
my Allred, in addition to four
A&M presidents since 1950.
The Texas Nurserymen’s Asso
ciation plans to take its problem
of ad valorem taxes on nursery
products to the Texas Supreme
Court through an application for
Writ of Error.
Alvis Vandygriff of Austin, at
torney for the nurserymen, said
Monday that a recent appellate
court decision from Amarillo
called for “nursery products” to
be lifted out of their tax-exempt
agricultural classification a n d
placed under ad valorem taxes.
Vandygriff was a speaker at the
25th annual Conference for Texas
Nurserymen and Landscape Horti
culturists last weekend.
The ad valorem classification, he
said, would open the door for ci
ties, counties and school districts
to levy taxes on growing “nursery
stock.” Nurserymen want to keep
their products in the agricultural
category and will carry the fight
to the State Supreme Court.
On other tax matters, the at
torney told the nurserymen that
there will be extensive state sales
tax reorganization measures of
fered at the next regular session
of the Texas Legislature, including
a straight tax across the board
eliminating all exemptions.
Another change to be offered
will be the method of tax collect- the raising and marketiii|
ing on nursery products, Vandy
griff said.
The nurserymen heart! a wide
variety of talks on the problems
and progress of landscaping and
alt mA
plants. They also toured
research facilities.
