Top Athletes Given Awards
At Spring Sports Bar-B-Q
The annual A&M Spring Sports
Barbecue was held last night in
the grove with awards being pre
sented to the caplins of the tennis,
golf, swimming* track, basketball
and baseball teams.
Also honored with awards were
the most valuable members of the
track, basketball and baseball
squads. Team members were intro
duced by their coaches at the
Brazos County A&M Club-spon
sored affair.
The ceremonies were ably con
ducted by Field Scovell, former
Aggie athlete and vice-president of
the Southland Life Insurance Co.
of Dallas. His gentle ribbing of
teams and coaches was a big fact
or in the success of the dinner.
Most valuable award in track
and field went to Sophomore weig-
htman Danny Roberts, a 21-year-
old from Cleveland. Roberts holds
the A&M record for the shotput
and has led coach Charlie Thomas’
thinclads in the discus through
out the season.
Carroll Broussard, holder of all
13 A&M basketball records, receiv
ed both the captain’s award and
most valuable player in his sport.
Dave Johnson, the Southwest
Conference’s Sophomore of the
Year, took the awai’d for the most
valuable player on A&M’s second-
placq baseball squacl.
A new trophy donated by the
Houston A&M Club, The Wally
Moon Award, went to thirdsacker
Bill Hancock, a -sophomore from
Bryan Saddle Club
Plans Horse Show
At Bryan Arena
The Bryan Saddle Club will
sponsor a horse show Friday at
7:30 p.m. at the Bryan Saddle
Club arena at Tabor road, in Bryan.
Admission is free.
Entry fee is one dollar for all
classes. The halter classes are:
mares at halter (weanlings to
three years), mares at halter (four
years and over), geldings and stal
lions at halter (weanlings to three
years), and geldings and stallions
at halter (four years and over).
In the perfoi-mance classes are
12 events children’s western plea
sure, teenage western pleasure,
ladies western pleasure, girl’s
cloverleaf barrel race, men’s west
ern pleasure, reining class, rescue
race, keyhole race, tunnel race,
boy’s barrel race, men’s barrel
race and the ribbon race.
Shreveport, La., who led the SWC
this season in hitting with .427.
The ward is slated to be given
each year to the .most improved
baseballer on the A&M squad.
Oscar Cordon, co-captain of the
swimming team, received the
team’s award for the most over
all service to the team. He also
accepted the team captain’s award.
Hale Sets Intramural Record,
.2! -6, In Class B Broad Jump
A new record was set in Class B
broad jump Tuesday, when Stephen
Hale of Sqd. 1 jumped 21’6” to
break the old record of 21’Ms” set
by Aci-ee of Company 5 in 1950.
In the shotput event, Class B,
David Murray took top honors with
a shot of 48’5”.
Second place in the Class B
broad jump event was Richter of
B-3 with a jump of 20’8M8”. Third
place went to Botary, F-l, 20’%”,
fourth place to Kellar, G-3, 19’7”,
and fifth place to Cramer, B-2,
19’4!£”.
Following Murray in the Class
B shotput event were Kellner, H-3,
47’6”; Bell, Sqd. 8, 46’3”; Roberts,
E-2, 44’11”, and Simpson, Sqd. 15,
44’7”.
In the Class A and C 100-yard
dash track event, LeRoy Caffey
of H-3 and Robert Paulson of Law
Hall tied for first place, both with
a time of 10.1.
Other finalists in the Class A
and C 100-yard dash were Kubesch,
H-3, 10.2; McDaniels, Sqd. 3, 10.3;
Deutrick, Pan American, 10.4; Bod
kin, Hart Hall, 10.4; Hoelting,
E-l, 10.5 and Van Dyke, H-3, 10.5.
All track finals are scheduled for
Friday at 5 p.m., according to
Charles E. McCandless, intramural
director.
For the 120-yard low hurdles,
Class A and C, finalists were
Michalak, H-3, 14.1; Knolle, H-3,
14.5; Deutrick, Pan American, 14.8;
Stone, Sqd. 12, 15.0; Clements,
B-l, 15.1, and Adams, A-3, 15.4.
In the Class B 120-yard low hur
dles, finalists were White, Sqd. 3,
15.2; Nichols, H-3, 15.3; Overton,
H-3, 15.3; West, A-3, 15.8; Johnsey,
G-3, 15.9, and Maryers, White
Band, 15.9.
Team finalists for Friday’s race
in the 880-yard relay, Class B en
try, are F-l, A-l, Sqd. 6, E-l, Sqd.
8, B-l, Sqd. 7, D-l, and Sqd. 5.
In the Class A and C entry,
team finalists for the 880-yard
relay are H-3, Sqd. f>. G-l, E-l,
A-3, Sqd. 3 and Sqd. 10.
