Kegler Banquet
Climaxes Year
A&M ended its bowling season
with the annual banquet at the
Triangle Restaurant Tuesday night.
Trophies and letters were pre
sented and officers for next year
were elected.
Jimmie Guy, junior electrical en
gineering major from Snyder took
over as chairman. John Tinney,
senior from Longview was elected
vice-chairman; Jerry Cowley, sen
ior from Marshall was chosen trea
surer; and Larry Davis, senior,
was made secretary.
Trophies were presented to the
winning teams in the three MSC
leagues.
The “Guy’s”, comprised of Jim
mie Guy (captain), Chuck Haynes,
John Yonkers, and Tommy Wool-
ridge took first place honors in
the Aggie All-Star League with
57 wins and 39 losses.
High team series went to the
“Pro’s” captained by Jim Butler
with Marvin H. “Pro” Butler, Rich
Hansen, and Olin Dart as they shot
2314. The “Pro’s” also had high
team game of 849 and high team
average with 703.
High individual average went to
Tinney with a 184. High individual
game of 255 was shot by Bill Ga-
vitt and Jim Butler won high in
dividual series with 636.
Gavitt was the most improved
bowler raising his average from
145 to 161.
The, A&Mjmatch team closed out
its season last Saturday in Dallas
as they won 11 out of 12 games to
clinch their fifth straight Texas
Intercollegiate Bowling Confer
ence championship.
The Cadets beat out the second
place Texas Longhorns by nine
games. A&M was 71-25 while Tex
as was 62-34.
Other schools in the league were
Sam Houston State, Arlington
State College, San Antonio Col
lege, and Texas Christian Univer
sity.
Ten Aggies keglers were awarcU-
ed letters, four for the first time
and six were repeaters.
Winning their first letter were
George Calloway, Olin Dart, But
ton Webb, and Rich Hansen.

Coach Tom Chandler’s varsity
baseballers met a disappointing
downfall Wednesday in the first
game of the crucial series that will
decide the SWC championship. The
Texas squad, behind the consistant
pitching of Tom Belcher, squeez
ed a 4-3 victory out of an eight inn
ing run.
The Ags and Longhorns battled
through three innings after the
fifth in a 3-3 tie. In the bottom of
the eighth, Texas catcher Gary
London hit a line shot over third
with one away. He made a two-
base hit out of it with a perfect
hook slide into second. Shortstop
Bill Bethea came up after Belcher-
had grounded out and punched a
left field line drive double that
scored London and spelled dismay
for A&M.
Now neck-and-neck in the confer
ence race, the Ags and Texas meet
today in a contest that the Farm
ers must win. If they do, they will
be co-champs in the SWC this
year, and, by virture of beating
Texas two-out-of-three, will repre
sent the conference at the NCAA
playoffs. If the Ags win, Texas
must playoff a rained out contest
with SMU to see if they can even
be co-champs.
Chuck McGuire pitched seven
and a half innings for the Aggies
but ended up receiving his second
conference loss. McGuire is now
3-2 in the SWC and 5-2 for the sea
son. He relieved Ed Singley in the
bottom of the second with three
men on, one out, and one ball on
the batter. He struck him out and
retired the side.
The Longhorns took an early

scored by a single off the bat
of Ray Hall for the Ags. Robert
McAdams had been on second and
was put out as he tried to come
home on that play.
Sqd. 8 Tops Corps
In Class A Softball
In the fifth, Bill Puckett led off
with a single for A&M, McGuire
popped up to Belcher and Bill
Grochett hit a grounded that forc
ed Puckett at second and put him
on first on the fielder’s choice.
Then Bill Hancock clobbered a shot
over the right field fence that
put Grochett and himself across.
A&M’s 3-1 lead was short-lived,
however, for in the bottom of the
fifth, Longhorn Ed Casper led off
with a single and then was scored
by a double from center fielder
David Skinner. Skinner alvanced
to third on an error. Knutson then
lined out to Roger Crouch in left.
On a sacrifice fly to right field,
Skinner scored. (McAdams made
the finest catch of the game on
this ball, hit by John Pinckney,
grabbing the long fly between cen
ter and right and then colliding
with Hall.)
Defeating Sqd. 6 in upperclass
man softball Wednesday night,
3-2, Sqd. 8 became this year’s
Corps champs.
Leading off, Sqd. 6 put two men
on in the first inning, but fail
ed to score. At bat Sqd. 8’s first
man laid down a bunt to get on
first. Two consective srtike outs
and then a pop out to shortshtop
retired the side.
In the top of the second with
men on second and third, Sqd. 6
poped a hit into centerfield to score
the first run of the game and take
the lead. At bat in the bottom of
second, Sqd. 8 made only one hit,
a fly to rightfield. Sqd. 6 retired
the side with two consecutive outs
at first.
Increasing their lead in the top
of fifth with several good hits to
the outfield, Sqd. 6 now led by two
runs. Coming to bat, Sqd. 8 beat
ing out a hit to shortstop then
stealing third, had a man within
scoring distance. On a sacrifice to
second, the runner at third scored.
A pop out to the pitcher retired
the side and ended the inning.
