A&M’s predominantly sophomore
baseball team showed they meant
business in the Southwest Con
ference baseball race as they
soundly thrashed Baylor 12-6 be
hind the power hitting- of Frank
Stark, Bill Hancock, Dave John
son and a Baylor gift of four er
rors.
The league-leading Farmers go
into next week’s crucial two-game
series with Texas needing one vic
tory to clinch the title as the race
goes down to the wire.
Texas remained a thin one-half
game behind the Ags by crushing
TCU 7-3 in Fort Worth. Texas
has a 10-2 record while A&M is
11-2.
Dave Johnson opened the scoring
in the Aggies’ conquest of Baylor
by smashing a solo home run deep
and high over the fence in straight
away center field as the lead-off
batter in the second inning. *
Stark duplicated Johnson’s shot
following a walk to Bill Grochett
.and a fielder’s choice by Hancock
in the third inning. The Aggies
added four more in the third on
a walk to Robert McAdams, a
double by Roger Crouch and Ray
Hall’s single.
This spelled the end for Bear
starter Henry Perkins He was
replaced by Richard Couey who
was greeted with a hard-hit ball
by Bill Puckett that got past the
Baylor first baseman. Couey then
served up a double to Chuck Mc
Guire before striking out second
baseman Grochett to retire the
side.
Baylor came back with four runs
in the top of the fourth on three
singles and a double by Audie Cox,
Bear renterfielder, to remain in
the game.
The Ags picked up breathing
room in the fifth when singles by
McAdams and Puckett and another
Baylor error were good for two
runs.

Two Rodeos To
Mayor Lewis Cutrer of Houston
has proclaimed that May 7 be Wal
ly Moon Day in the Bayou City.
A former Aggie baseball star and
now standout outfielder for the
Los Angeles Dodgers, Moon will
be in Houston through the first
part of next week for the Dodgers’
three-game series with the Colt
,45’s.
To highlight the occasion, the
Houston A&M Club will honor
Moon it its weekly noon luncheon
in the Rice Hotel Main Ballroom.
Marvin Tate, president at the
Houston club, said the luncheon
will be an open affair, but quickly
added, “Sorry, ladies, but the
meeting will be just like Texas
A&M College—men only.”
Further tribute will be payed to
Moon at a pregame ceremony on
May 8.
Marty Karow, now baseball
coach at Ohio State University,
discovered Moon in Hope, Ark.,
and recruited him for A&M where
he was then baseball and basket
ball coach. Karow will fly down
from Columbus, Ohio, to attend
the luncheon and also to meet an
other of his foi-mer players, Frank
Howard, who went into the Dod
ger system from Ohio State.
