The Lon Morris College Octet,
which in various seasons has per
formed in major cities of this
nation and in Mexico City, will be
presented in concert at the All
Faiths Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The YMCA Cabinet is sponsoring
the public performance.
The Octet is composed of eight
coeds who come from various sec
tions of Texas. Robert Fordyce,
head of the Department of Music
at Lon Morris College and a gradu
ate in music of the University of
Indiana, directs the musical group.
The Octet to be heard here Fri
day night has appeared in the
First Methodist Churches of Dallas
and Houston, at Chamber of Com
merce banquets and has performed
on several television programs.
Lon Morris College is tradi
tionally famous for its girls octet.
The Octet, through the years,
has appeared in Madison Square
Garden in New York City, the
Chicago Stadium.

In an age when the accent is on
youth in nearly every field, a
bunch of old cowboys turn things
around once a year in the cow
muntry of Southwest Texas, at
Encinal.
They stage an Old Man’s Roping
contest. You can’t enter until
you’re 50 years old. By then—
judging from their enthusiasm—
you’ve got the bug so bad you
can’t quit.
This is no mere exhibition, either.
The old timers haul their roping
horses from all over Texas, some
from as far as 500 miles away.
And they do a young athlete’s job
of roping the calves that ex-rodeo
roper Juan Salinas hauls in for
the contest. They flat aim to win.
Each over-50 contestant must
rope six calves. The one with the
lowest total of times wins the $200
saddle that Salinas puts up each
year as first prize. Usually about
15 of the old timers show up—
which means that each one must
rope his half dozen calves in the
space of just a couple of hours.
The roping is continuous, there
are no rests.
It would be a stiff afternoon’s
work for a cowboy of half 50—
but the majority of the old timers
are still trim and tough. Most

is being held on the University of
Texas campus.

search Institute, Texas Suction of
the ASCE and the Central Texas
Branch, American Meteorological
Society.

men the same way golf or poker
does others.
So wide has the fame of the
Encinal contests spread that rop
ing enthusiasts from all over Tex
as come to watch. They line the
big arena, located on Salinas’
ranch, and watch from behind the
wheel of their cars. When one of
the ropers makes a particularly
fast catch and tiedown the horns
honk in blaring unison, as a spec
tacular kind of applause.
