EVIAN, France—(A 5 )—Final de
tails of a peace agreement for
Algeria were taken up by rebel
and French negotiators in a
guarded conference Wednesday.
There was speculation that the
talks may take no more than four
or five days.
The two delegations — with
France’s led by Louis Joxe, minis
ter for Algerian affairs, and the
rebels’ by their tough, wary deputy
premier, Belkacem Krim—met for
five hours in morning and after
noon sessions in a hotel of this
lakeside resort.
Strict secrecy surrounded the
gathering. French security forces
stood guard. No news conferences
were scheduled by either side.
Both French and rebel authori
ties are aware of the danger of
inflaming further the partisan
emotions fanned by terrorist op
erations in the North African ter
ritory.

is campaigning with explosives,
gunfire and death threats to keep
Algeria French, as it has been for
years, and protect the holdings of
the million European residents.
Moslems are waging similar street
warfare in support of the desire
of most of Algeria’s nine million
North Africans for independence.
In Algeria, where the Moslem
masses marked the end of the holy
month of Ramadan, the tide of
violence ebbed.

mixing a dance-heat with an inter
national motif. He started his per
sonal hit parade with “Pretend,’
an instrumental featuring the
guitar background so beloved by
the Latin countries.
This was followed by “Caravan,”
which had a touch of the desert.
Then continuing his list he added
an African flavor with “Skokiaan,”
a Zulu drinking song; “Blue Mi
rage,” always played at engage
ments, and “Shish Kabob,” which
added spice to the line.
Marterie said of student dancers
of the past and present, “The kids
used to dance only to the slow
tunes. When we’d plan a jump
number they’d crowd around the
stand and go wild just listening.
Now, however, they stay out on
the floor when we pick up the
tempo.”
