They will choose either the Marine Engineering or the Marine Transportation option following the summer sessions. During the first year, cadets will receive instruction in Naval Science as well as in other basic courses. Dodson said everyone must begin his studies as a fresh man and that there would be no transfers. After the first year of college, the cadets will go to New York in preparation for a training cruise to Europe. Education will be con tinued at sea and there will be time for sightseeing in Europe. The cruise will last about 2V2 months, Dodson stated. Cadets will have about three weeks vacation before entering the Academy at Galveston. After one year of studies there, cadets will again take a cruise to Europe. In the following years cadets will own their own ship and conduct cruises to South America. The ship will be commanded and operated according to academic standing with the seniors being in command. Dodson said that expenses would be about the same as for other in stitutions except for the summer cruises, and that $600 federal aid per student is being allotted. (Today, centuries later, the search for stronger steels goes on. And among those making most dramatic strides in advancing the state of the metallurgical art are the research teams at Ford’s Scientific Laboratory in Dearborn, Michigan.' In exploring the "world of microstructure,” these scientists, using methods of extreme sophistication, have been able to look at iron and steel on a near- atomic scale. They have discovered secrets of nature leading to new processing ^techniques which yield steels of ultra-high strength unknown a decade ago. 1 jThe promise of such v techniques seems limitless. As man develops the needs and means to travel more swiftly on earth and over interplanetary reaches—* wherever economy of weight and space is required—strength of physical ( materials will become paramount. This is another example of how Ford is gaining , leadership through scientific research and engineering. H. L. Heaton, Director of Admissions and Registrar 77t20 SOSOLIK'S T.
