Main St. Bryan An era in the sports history of A&M comes to an end tonight when big Carroll Broussard dons his familiar number ‘54’ jersey for his last Aggie basketball game. Broussard, the Mr. Everything in A&M basketball annals, will start his 84th straight game when Coach Bob Rogers’ crew faces the Baylor Bears at 8 p.m. in G. Rollie White Coliseum. He has never failed to start a game since becoming eligible for basketball here. Just last week Broussard was named All-Southwest Conference for the third consecutive year and given honorable mention in the As sociated Press All-America. Brous sard won second team honors on the 1961 Helms Foundation All- America team and honorable men tion from Look Magazine. / Last Thursday the student Sen ate designated today “Carroll Broussard Appreciation Day.” The Senate will present Broussard a plaque before the beginning of to night’s game. Broussard’s records, which range from the most points scored in a season (538 in 1960-61) to the most points scored in one game (37 twice in 1960-61), have made eyes sparkle in Aggie-exes from Walla Walla, Wash., to Pensacola, Fla. His other marks include most field goals in one game (15 in 1961 again Arkansas and Texas), most field goals in one season (189 in 1960-61) and most free throws in one game (19 against Texas in 1961). Broussard is the all-time second leading scorer for one season in the Southwest Conference. His 339 points in 14 SWC games (24.2 average) in the 1960-61 season is surpassed only by TCU’s Dick O’Neal who scored 362 points in 1954-55. Through his 71 completed var sity games, Broussard has netted 1,364 points. The old A&M rec ord, held by Neil Swisher, was 984 points. As a schoolboy eager, Broussard, who is an honor student at Aggie- land, was one of the best perform ers to ever come out of the South Coast region of Port Arthur. By the time he was a junior at Thom as Jefferson High, he had blos somed into an athlete with great potential and was chosen to the All-State Tournament team with his squad which won the state championship. In his final year as a schoolboy, recognition really began to come Bulletin Board Professional Societies New members will be elected to Tau Beta Pi at 5 p.m. in Room 231, Chemistry Building. Then came the big de cision of where to go to college. “I guess the real reason I came to A&M was because of Coach Rogers,” Broussard says. “He just about lived on my doorstep.” As a first year man at A&M, Broussard continued his cool, re laxed type of play. At the end of the season, he was named the most valuable freshman in the SWC apd was top man on the All- SWC team. When sophomore year rolled around, the business major’s “big gest thrill” was in store for him— playing in the final Southwest Conference Tournament in Hous ton, where he was voted the most valuable player. From this beginning, Broussard went on to easily break every rec- oi’d ever set in basketball at A&M. And he did it in a graceful, pain less manner that has become fa mous throughout the U.S. Broussard isn’t decided about his future now that his collegiate carrer has ended. Whatever he chooses, he will -long live in the history of A&M athletics.
