Cornish of Mississippi State University. Speaking at A&M’s 11th annual Texas Agricultural Aviation Con ference and Short Course on Pest Control Feb. 26-27, the head of MSU’s Aerophysics Department said the problem is one of the main ones facing the aerial applicating industry. Ground equipment is con stantly being improved and is of fering more competition. Approximately 500 persons at tending the meeting heard Cornish describe new aircraft designs and features which are expected to boost aerial application efficiency. One of the features is “boundry layer control” to increase wing lift under greater loads at low speeds. The best BLC method de vised so far consists of sucking away the layer of low energy air, the boundry layer, near the wing LOOK For The Person Who Desires The Unusual In A Radio. He said that distribution of lift along the span can also be altered by distributing the BCL in a cer tain way. Downwash behind the wing becomes more uniform and the ejected meterial is deposited more evenly along the swath. Research underway on the use of a jet pump is pointing the way to improved swath distribution of ma terial, no matter what the speed of the aircraft. - The speaker said ducted pro pellers show promise for planes which can operate from short, un prepared fields, thus saving time and cost of operation. Lambert Wilkes, conference chair man and associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Engi neering said that about 450 per sons attended the conference. Sub jects covered were agricultural chemicals, aircraft distribution sys tems, weather forecasting, medi cal considerations, air polution, state and federal regulations governing farm chamicals, and le gal responsibilities of aerial ap plicators. College Aee. ers Association, and the Texas | Aerial Applicators Association. Robert R. Bunch, director of the California Aerial Applicators As sociation, told conference members that strict adherence to safety rul es has sharply cut injuries and fatalities in his home state. “Our association is proud to say that in all crop applications by all of the applicators in California * : we had just one pilot fatality in 1961. This means that in the three \ years of our safety program, the ' . fatality rate has been cut 1,400 per cent. In 1961, we had 23 FA A reported ag-aircraft accidents as compared to 61 in 1958, a reduction ? of almost 300 per cent.” Bunch said. Discussing “Changes In Legal Trends Affecting Agricultural Avi ation,” Stuart W. Turner of San Francisco, Calif., consulting agro- logist, said legal disputes over aerial application problems are be coming more frequent and com plex. He advised greater care by com- merical applicators to avoid chem ical drift to other crops and in jury to property being treated un der- contract. Taking a look into the 1960’s, Dr. Tyrus Timm, head of the De partment of Agricultural Econo mics and Sociology, said he ex pects the exodus from farms to de crease. Farm size jumped 40 per cent during the 1950’s but this should drop to about 30 per cent within current decade. Cultivated acreage should drop about 14 per cent compared to that of 10 years ago. By 1970, acreage will be down around 4 per cent. “But less acreage will produce more crops and livestock,” Timm said. “Technology will not slow down; records will be broken. Agri culture will be more specialied.” On the demand side, the outlook is for a steady and slow trend. Population increase and higher in comes will be an important fact or, but industrial use of farm pro ducts probably won’t live up to expectations. Farm expenditures likely will go up faster than farm prices. “There’s nothing more perman ent than a temporary government agency in agriculture,” he said. The article suggest a co-op using a point system as its basis. The sitter would have points added to her account and the person who goes out would have the same points sub tracted from her account. The person who lost points would regain them w T hen she sat for someone else. The number of points would depend on the number of children, whether the sitter feeds them lunch or supper, etc. Since most of the couples here in college are of the same age and financial bracket, this type of baby sitting arrange ment might be just the answer to a serious problem. Any one interested may attend a meeting to organize this baby sitting co-op Thursday at 8 p. m. in the Brooks Room of the YMCA Building.
