To VQS Tuesday, Feforuary 20, IOCS THE BATTALION Ags Stay In 1st Place; Crush Progs, 87 - 65 Behind the tremendous field g-oal shooting of Carroll Broussard and Tommy Smith plus the brilliant rebounding of Jerry Windham, the Aggies cagers coasted an easy Southwest Conference victory over the TCU Horned Frogs, 87-G5. With the win, the Cadets re- maineed tied for the first position in the SWC as Texas Tech and SMU won their respective games Saturday night. Each have a 7.3 mark. The “gold-dust twins,” Brous sard and Smith, together, hit on 20 out of 30 field goal attempts. Broussard, who was high for the game with 29 points (his top performance of the year), made good on 12 out of 19 while Smith l^nmnrm “Sports Car Center” Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Car* Sales—Parts—Service “We Service All Foreign Cars 111416 Texas Ave. TA 2-461 1 rm ■ M pa JL ■■!■■■■ ■ ■ ■ K*m.m mu ■ ■ M« hit on eight out of 11. Broussai'd personally knocked the p^rogs out of a 1-3-1 zone in the fi'O ’st half with his high-arching ji limp shot from deep in the corner. Si a lith came forth with his starring sh looting in the second half. While the ‘gold-dust twins” were po p ping the nets, Windham was gnibbing the most rebounds off the* boards of any Aggie this sea son — 19. Along with his 19 reb«3unds, Windham also racked up 16 p >oints. Ini the field goal percentage department, the Aggies led with a 511.4 average (36 out of 70) whilo TCU was hitting on 26 out of 60' attempts for a 43.3 per cent. A&uM led in rebounds with 56 to 29 for TCU. TCTU’s star playmaker and top scorer in the SWC with a 21.4 averages, Phil Reynolds, stayed al most uijo with his conference aver age as he dropped in 21 points. At this point, Broussard started his assault on TCU’s goal and the score at the end of the first half was 40-29. Broussard had half of his team's 40 points at the intermission. In the second half, the Aggies continued their outstanding shoot ing and slowly increased the mar gin over the Frogs. Mid-way in the second half, Smith put on a dazzling show as he made 10 straight points on five field goals. The pressure isn’t off the Aggies yet. Tonight in Houston they en gage in a “must” battle with the Rice Owls. The Owls are out of the SWC race since they have lost five games, but they can still upset the leaders. Rice Coach Johnnie Frankie said, ‘Somebody else is going to get upset before the season is over.” This could be a warning to the Aggdes and the Red Raiders. TABLE ??????? The screen has been taken down for the 1962 American League season. The remaining out field fences will be uniform height of nine feet above the ground. This will knock two feet off the left field barrier. (Photo by Ben Wolfe) Fish Edge Wags After trailing the entire ball- game, and by a considerable mar gin during the first half, Coach Shelby Metcalf’s Fish basketball- ers staged a comeback victory over the TCU Wogs Saturday night, 57-56. Benny Phillips’ only two points of the game, a pair of free thi’ows, were the most important of the game for A&M as they dropped with 16 seconds remaining in the game to put the Fish across the wire first. The Aggie frosh appeared to hang on quite well until midway in the first period when Pat Pee bles and Don Hoyt of the Wogs started sinking shots with a re- guarity that left the Fish trail ing, 35-26 at the half. It was a different story when the second period began, how ever, with the Fish closing the gap by leaps and bounds, Midway in the second half, the Fish cop ped the lead momentarily, only to lose it until the final seconds. The remainder of the second half was a see-saw build-up of points for each team with the Wogs ahead by a few all the time. Holt committed his fifth foul with only seconds left in the contest, though, and Phillips dropped his two char ity shots to put the Fish ahead, 57-56. Game high-point man was Fish center Tim Timmerman, who tuim- ed in a respectable total of 21. He was also the best rebounder with 10. Holt was high man for the Wogs with 18 points. Archie Clay ton of the TCU frosh was the second best rebounder of the game with 9.
