Syracuse led 15-14, when Notre
Dame tried a field goal which
missed. On the play, however,
Syracuse was detected running
into or roughing the kicker and
was penalized 15 yards. Notre
Dame, although time had run out,
was given another play and kicked
the field goal for a 17-15 victory.
Controversy has raged ever
since over whether the call was
according to the rules.
Dave Nelson, University of Del
aware coach; and Elwood Geiges,
a former official and member of
the NCAA liules Committee, were
assigned to adjust the rule.
Geiges and Nelson said they
amended the rule to allow a pen
alty and another play—extension
of the game—in such situations.
In the same situation, however,
if Syracuse led and had the ball
and committed a foul, the period
would not be extended.

Leads AP Poll
By The Associated Press
Pi’airie View of Texas and
Grambling of Louisiana ran one-
two in this week’s Associated
Press small college basketball
poll, but there are likely to be
some changes made.
Prairie View clung to its lead
despite a loss Saturday night to
Southern University and another
Monday night to Jackson (Miss.)
State to put its record at 15-2.
However, the voting by a regional
board of eight selectors was based
on games through Saturday.
Grambling, tied for second last
week, won two games and took
over undisputed possession of the
runner-up spot. But Grambling
suffered a setback this week when
six players, including Albert John
son, were cut from the team Tues
day due to scholastic deficiencies.
Hofstra of New York and Ken
tucky Wesleyan gained the most
ground in the poll. Hofstra
climbed from fifth to third and
Kentucky Wesleyan advanced two
notches to fourth.
Ag Bowling Team
Holds Two Game
Lead Over Texas
The Texas A&M Match Bowling
Team holds a slim 2-game lead
over the University of Texas after
the 5th round of the Texas Inter
collegiate Bowling Conference in
San Antonio last Saturday.
The Aggies have 45 wins and 15
losses to TU’s 43-17 record.
In San Antonio, the Aggies won
nine and lost three, taking four
from TCU, four from Arlington
State, and dropping three out of
four to Sam Houston State.
In winning four games from
TCU, the Aggies shot a new high
team series for the year of 2873,
surpassing the old record of 2837
shot by Texas. John Tinney led
the scoring for the cadets in this
series with a 602, followed by
Rich Hansen, 578; Jim Butler, 574;
Chuck Haynes, 566; and Tony
Servello, 553.

With the Aggies’ victory over the Texas Longhorns and
SMU’s defeat of Texas Tech, the thrilling Southwest Confer
ence was again thrown into it usual turmoil.
After the Red Raiders had won some 20 straight games
at home, they now have a losing streak there. TCU’s Horned
Frogs broke the jinx on Feb. 6 and the Mustangs did it on
Feb. 13. , J ... .
Now three teams are tied for the top position m the
SWC (SMU, A&M and Tech with 6-3 records) and its any
one’s guess who is going to come out with the title flag.
It may seem that SMU has the upper hand on the Raiders
and the Aggies. With only five games remaining on schedule,
the Ponies have three of them in Dallas—against Rice, 1CU
and Arkansas. „ „ ^ , „ ., „
Out of the five contests left on tap for the Red Raiders,
only two are in friendly-Lubbock Coliseum. Tech plays the
Arkansas Razorbacks in West Texas on Feb. 17 and its home
schedule is over on Feb. 27 when the Aggies come to town.
Three of the Aggies’ remaining five games will be in G.
Rollie White Coliseum—TCU, Arkansas and Baylor. The two
on the road are of course, Tech and the rugged Rice Owls in
Houston. ' ■ ■

Since the semester break, A&M’s Carroll Broussard has
been his old self. The Aggies have played four SWC games
since the spring term started—against TCU, Rice, SMU and
Texas—and Broussard has scored 87 points for a 21.7 av-
"^Not only has his point production been up, but Carroll
has been clearing the boards much more often. It is Tather
obvious that he has shaken the chronic back injury that
bothered him during the first part of the season.
Out of the 19 games the Aggies have played thus tar
this season, Broussard has been the leading team scorer nine
times and has been A&M’s top rebounder eight times.
Broussard is still very much behind his 1960-61 season
when he scored 538 points for the season and 339 in SWC
play. So far this season, Broussard has dropped 325 points
through the hoop in season competition and 153 in the South
west Conference games. /
Despite his decrease in scoring this winter, Broussard
continues to break his own school record for scoring witll
every point he makes.
Dick Hickerson, the Aggies’ star first baseman for the>
1961 season who signed a professional contract after ful
filling his collegiate competition, is back in College Station
and is awaiting the start of spring training.
Dick inked with the Baltimore Orioles and played with
the club’s team in Arizona this past fall in the Arizona In
structional League. He was eighth in the league in hitting
as he averaged .331.
He will report to training in a few days and everyone is
wishing Dick well.
