Page 2 THE BATFALION College Station, Texas Thursday, February 15, 1962 ±£fl Job Calls Pass In Review The following editorial was carried in the Feb. 10 issue of The Houstonian, student newspaper of Sam Houston State College in Huntsville: “ ‘We take care of our own. * “A few short week ago a tradition was laid to rest at the foot of Old Main when Tripod, a three legged Heinz variety mongrel, died. “Plans have been made to buy a stone marker for his grave. At least $200 is needed. Only $19.25 has been donated. “And who were the doners? College students? Three of the major contributors were the bookstore, a Huntsville lady, and an Aggie! “If Tripod is to have a gravestone, the rest of the money must come from the various professional and social organiza tions and individuals. “Then we’ll be able to say: “ ‘We take care of our own.” ★ ★ ★ Every Ag, prof and dining hall employee on the A&M campus knows OUR Tripod, though few, we would wager, know his story. But how many knew of the Tripod who, until his death Jan. 9, was the unofficial mascot at Sam Houston State? The story of Sam Houston’s Tripod makes us wonder if perhaps the two three-legged dogs might not be related. Possibly even half-brothers. After all, the father of both dogs was obviously a rover. Both dogs were the same color—a mustard-yellow. Both dogs were missing their left front leg. And listen to this about Houston Tripod taken from the Houston Post. “Tripod played no favorites. He was independent to be gin with, and he was never changed by the affection and at tention displayed by the students. He formed no attach ments—you fed him, he wagged his tail and moved on. He always moved on.” That Tripod came to Sam Houston 14 years ago. His loss was understandably great. We hope he gets his headstone.
