Em/en Roosevelt, President National State Bank, Elizabeth, N.J. “If my college adviser had prophesied that studying psy chology would some day help promote my career in bank ing, I’d have scoffed. Yet that is exactly what has hap pened. And when I think about it now the reason seems obvious. The facts and figures of banking, or of any other field, are mechanical devices. They take on real meaning only when related to people. “Good psychology is also the basis of all teamwork. And, since most of today’s business and scientific prob lems are too complicated for ‘one man’ solutions, team work is essential. If you want to be a valuable team player, and a likely candidate for captain, be the person who understands people. Learn what it takes for people to work together in harmony. Learn how to win trust and confidence. Learn basic human psychology. “Bear this in mihd, too. World tension, community tension, business tension, even family tension are the facts of everyday life. The more you know of human behavior, the better prepared you will be to deal with these problems. “So, if you have the chance, take a course devoted to ‘people.’ Your class adviser can probably help you fiT a psychology elective into your schedule. I don’t think you’ll regret it... I know I didn’t.” W. Emlen Roosevelt first became a bank president while still in his early thirties. Today he heads still another bank and is a leader in New Jersey financial circles. Em’s been a CAMEL fan ever since his undergraduate days at Princeton. il I !»iR & iilil 'ftp™*'"- rg If flavor is your major satisfaction in smoking... Nelson, profAsor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Sociology, is the author of an article appearing in the January issue of the “Journal of Marketing.” “Seven Principles in Image Formation” is the title of the article. The “Journal of Marketing” is the professional journal of the American Marketing Association. Nelson defines “image” as a composite of the attitudes which a group of people holds toward a product. The professor also prepared a paper, “Factors Contributing to the Public Image of Range Man agement,” which was delivered at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Range Man agement in Corpus Christi. Nelson is now working on a paper, “Principles Involved in Image Formation: Implications for Area Development,” to be given during a Southern Agricultural Workers Association meeting Feb. 5-6 at Jacksonville, Fla. After his return from Florida, Nelson will be working with R. L. Smith, head of the data processing center, on a program analyzing data from eight southern states. The data concern social, psycho logical and economic characteris tics associated with varying types of adjustments made by indi viduals and family groups. York, N. Y., Jan. 28 to Feb. 2. The conference paper, titled “Single Phasing as Determined by Control Circuit Impedence,” was prepared in collaboration with Dr. N. L. Schmitz, professor of elec trical engineering at the University of Wisconsin in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Ph.D. degree. Presented in the paper is a new concept for determining values of control winding circuit impedance which cause the single phasing mode of operation by the a-c in duction servomotor. The concept allows the development of a simple graphic construction which quickly establishes whether or not any value of control impedance will cause single phasing.
