Jofre Favorite To
Take Bantam Title
SAG PAULO, Brazil t/P)—Bra
zil’s Eder Jofre was rated a top-
heavy favorite Wednesday to cap
ture undisputed possession of the
world bantamweight boxing title
in Thursday’s 15-round bout with
Ireland’s Johnny Caldwell.
The match is scheduled for 9
p.m. EST.
The bantam, 118-pound, division
has had two champions for sev
eral months, following the retire
ment of Mexico’s Joe Becerra af
ter he was knocked out in a non
title bout Aug. 30, 1960.
Jofre, 25, won recognition in
South America and by the U.S.
National Boxing Association Nov.
8, 1960, when he knocked out Eloy
Sanchez, the man who had sent
Becerra into retirement. No Bra
zilian ever has held an undisputed
world boxing title.
Caldwell, 23, earned European
recognition as the world champ
by outpointing Alphonse Halimi
Mar. 30 and repeating the victory
Oct. 31. Halimi was the bantam
weight champ before Becerra.
Both of the bantams are un
beaten.
Willie Pep, former feather
weight champ, will referee the
match which will be scored by
three judges.
Writers Pick Pro Football As Best
By BEN OLAN
Associated Press Sports Writer
Will professional football in 10
or 20 years replace baseball as
our national pastime ?
“Yes,” voted 109 of the 215
sportswriters and broadcasters
participating in a recent Associ
ated Press poll. There were 106
dissenters.
Twenty-five voters insisted that
pro football already has knocked
baseball out of the box as Amer
ica’s No. 1 sport. Fifteen others
predicted the grid game will take
over in fewer than 10 years.
The question was prompted by
a record 1961 attendance of 3,986,-
159 with an average of 40,675 in
the National Football League plus
the larger crowds pulled in by the
rival American Football League
in its second year of opei’ation.
Meanwhile, major league base
ball attendance dropped 5.6 per
cent despite the addition of two
new teams, the Minnesota Twins
and Los Angeles Angels. The
NFL added one new club, the
Minnesota Vikings.
Most of those favoring pro foot
ball pointed to the game’s almost
24-Year-Old Youth
To Try 24-Mile
Swim In Neveda
BOULDER CITY, Nev. (JP)—A
tall, blonde 24-year-old says she
will try to swim 24 miles across
Lake Mead Sunday.
Mary Margaret Revell, of De
troit, daughter of a Bakersfield,
Calif., oral surgeon, expects to
spend 12 hours in 50-degree water.
At least four of it will be after
dark when desert temperatures
drop quickly.
“I want to swim 12 miles
across and 12 back,” she said,
“but it’s awfully cold. Last week
end there were winds up to 50
miles an hour.”

“Baseball is dying, claimed one
writer. “The excitement of pro,
football overshadows even the
most spectacular of baseball's
shows, the World Series. Pro
football has so much to offer
sports fans who want to see ac
tion rather than dull, nine-inning
marathons that sometimes last
four hours.”
“Pro football is the top sport
right now,” insisted another writ
er. “Baseball has been hurt by
longer schedules, the two All-Star
games, expansion and the killing
off of the minor leagues.”
The diamond defenders, among
other points, noted that pro foot
ball games are played only once
a week compared to baseball’s
every day scheduling.
Said one dissenter “Baseball
tracts the youngsters throught
Little League and the Babe P,j
leagues and will always be m
of participant sport than in
ball.”
