Tomorrow Named
State’s Arbor Day
Four Attending
Forestry Meet
Arbor Day this year will be oh- 1
served throughout Texas tomor- '
row, according to the official
proclamation issued by Gov. Price
Daniel. Marvin G. Angle, presi
dent, Texas Forestry Association,
and Dr. Ar D, Folweiler,. director,
Texas Forest' Service, witnessed
the signing and accepted the offi
cial document.
The proclamation says, “Texas
derives many benefits from its
trees, as a raw material for its
many industries, as protection for
its soil, and as cover for wildlife.
“The continued economic prog
ress of the state is, in a large
measure, related to this forest
wealth. Trees are not only living
objects of beauty and utility, they
are a renewable resource.
“To aid in the perpetuation of
this gift of nature, our forests
need to be protected from the rav
ages of forest fires, insects and
disease, and renewed through an
nual planting.”
In his proclamation, Gov. Dan
iel urges all Texans, particularly
the public schools, to observe this
occasion appropriately in the in
terest of our state and nation.
Arbor Day in Texas was first
recognized in Temple, a communi
ty which originally had compara
tively few trees. In 1889, the peo
ple of Temple passed a resolution
advocating the observance of Ar
bor Day on February 22. Sena
tor Tyler, of Belton, introduced to
the legislature an Arbor Day reso
lution which subsequently became
a law. , - ,t ■
This original Arbor Day law ex
pired in 1925, and during the suc
ceeding 24 years, the custom of
observing Arbor Day on George
Washington’s birthday was con
tinued by the governor’s procla
mation. In 1949, a resolution des
ignating the third Friday in Jan
uary as Arbor Day was adopted
by the Texas legislature.
