Texas’ ill-mannered Longhorns,
backed by the usual tactics of
trash-throwing’, and fighting and
“poor Aggie” cries, won a heated
Southwest Conference basketball
contest last night in Gregory Gym,
64-57.
With 2:29 remaining in the first
half, a slug fest broke out when
two Longhorns, Jack Dugan and
Mike Humphrey, and Aggie Ron
Durbon squared off. Some of the
7,500 fans poured on the floor and
more fights commenced. When it
was all over, Texas’ Coach Harold
Bradley asked the crowd to please
stop throwing trash on the court
and the highly-spirited group settl
ed down.
Broussard Cut
Aggie ace Carroll Broussard,
who was high for A&M with 13
points, was the only casualty from
Shorthorns Defeat
Ag Frosh, 71-68
The on-again, off-again Aggie
Fish were helped to another off
performance last night in Gre
gory Gymnasium as the Texas
Shorthorns took advantage of a
highly-partisan crowd to edge
them, 71-68.
Texas ran its season record to
five wins against no defeats with
the victory. The Fish are now
2-4 for the route.
A&M led briefly in the opening
moments, • 1-0, on a free throw.
But the aggressive Shorthorns
quickly gained the lead and were
never headed. At one time they
led by as much as 10 points. The
smallest margin in the second half
came with 1:02 remaining, when
the score was 69-68. A Texas free
throw attempt was wild, but they
controlled the rebound and drop
ped in a quick two points to end
the game.
Jake Carter was the leading
scorer for Texas with 22 points.
Paul Timmons of Clear Creek
led the Aggie scoring with 19,
followed by teammate Jay Baker
of Aldine with 17 points.
Fish Center Tim Timmerman
continued his domination of the
boards, pulling down 13 rebounds
to lead in that department. He also
contributed seven points in the
losing effort.
As a team, the Shorthorns nudg
ed the Fish aside in the rebound
category, managing to pick off
49 to the Aggie freshmen’s 46.

“The fans at A&M wear halos
compared to the fans over here,”
Tommy Blake, A&M’s sports pub
licity director said after the game.
“SSure the crowds are loud at
Aggieland, but they don’t act like
hoodlums and start fights and
throw cups and paper.”
Fi’ee throws again spelled the
reason for the Aggie def&eat.
Texas hit on 24 out of 31 charity
attempts while A&M was only
making 15 out of 25.
From the field the Longhorns
made good on 38.5 per cent (20
of 53) and the Aggies hit on 21
out of 58 attempts for a 36.2 per
cent.
In the rebound department, the
Aggies were victorious as they
grabbed 46 while Texas got 42.
Jerry Windham was the leader
with 15 rebounds. Broussard was
next with nine.
The Aggies led only one time
throughout the game and that
was 1-0. Then a few minutes
later the Cadets tied the game at
11-11 on a jump shot by Tommy
Smith, who dropped in 10 points.
At 12:00 left in the first half,
Texas’ Butch Skeete, the game’s
top scorer with 17 points, hit a
jumper to make the score 13-11.
The ‘Horns were never behind
from there to the end.
At the halftime recess, the
Longhorns prevailed, 35-29.
Cadets Sliced Score
Twice in the second half the
cadets sliced the score to within
one point on field goals by Bennie
Lenox, but on each occasion the
Steers spurred ahead by seven
points.

SWC play. Texas has a 9-4 season
mark and are 2-2 in SWC com.
