From every angle, the 1961 foot
ball season was probably the most
successful in Southwest Confer
ence history.
The league started out with an
outstanding intersectional record
—12 victories, 7 losses, 1 tie. Such
powers as Louisiana State, Kan
sas, Oklahoma and Florida were

felled. The 16-3 victory Rice reg
istered over Louisiana State was
the only defeat suffered by the
Tigers, who beat Mississippi and
then won the Orange Bowl over
Colorado in rather easy fashion.
Texas Christian’s 7-7 tie with
Ohio State was another highlight
and it also was Texas Christian
that beat Kansas 17-16.
A pecularity of the campaign
was this: Rise beat Louisiana
State by 13 points, Texas beat
Rice 34-7, Louisiana State beat
Mississippi 10-7, yet Texas beat
Mississippi 12-7.
And still another quirk: Texas
beats Rice by 27 points, Rice
swamps Texas Christian 35-16.
yet Texas Christian beats Texas
6-0.
It just points up more than ever
the equality of the nation’s col
lege football. Any team is good
enough to beat the heralded best
on a certain occasion.
It also shows just how tough i
is for any team to be undefeated
and untied in these times of in-
| tense recruiting.
The real payoff on the South
west Conference’s strength na-
| tionally came not only from the
I Rice, Texas Christian and Texas
[ victories in intersectional football
j but the showing made by the
league in the bowl games.
There was a break-even with
Baylor walloping Utah State 24-9
in the Gotham Bowl and Texas
downing Mississippi 12-7 in the
Cotton Bowl. The Kansas 33-7
strapping of Rice in the Bluebon
net Bowl must be mentioned, if
casually. It was another of those
unusual happenings. Rice, as re
called, easily beat Texas Christian,
which had won over Kansas. Yet
Kansas lashed Rice unmercifully.
Arkansas, lost to Alabama 10-3

in the Sugar Bowl to make it 50-50
for the conference in the bowl
battles.
Even the small colleges had a
good season in Texas. Lamar
Tech helped the state with its
21-14 victory over Middle Tennes
see in the Tangerine Bowl.
It was a good year for Texas
colleges in the bowl battles. The
state won four out of six.
Wharton started it with a 26-0
victory over Mississippi Junior
College in the Hospitality Bowl
Then came Baylor’s victory anc
Lamar’s triumph.
Harlingen took a 40-8 strapping
from McKeesport, Pa. in the Mill
Bowl along with Rice’s defeat ir
the Bluebonnet Bowl for the only
losses.
Commissioner Foss
Gets New Contract
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (^—Direc
tors of the American Footbal’
League ended their winter meet
ing on a harmonious note Wed
nesday, giving Commissioner Joe
Foss a new five-year contract and
pledging an all-out effort to stay
alive.
The anticipated renewal of a
bitter clash between Foss, the ex-
Marine flying ace of World War
II, and Harry Wismer, president
of the New York Titans, failed to
materialize.
The owners voted unanimously
to tear up Foss’ contract, which
was to expire this year, and give
him a new one with an undisclosed
boost in pay.
Wismer was pi'esent at the
after-midnight session when word
was announced of the league’s
support of Foss, and said he was
n’t mad at anybody, Foss included.
There was no demand by Wis
mer, as he had previously prom
ised, to move the league head*-
quarters from Dallas to New
York.
In a final session Wednesday
morning, Foss named a commit
tee composed of Wayne Valley of
Oakland, Ralph Wilson of Buffalo
and Lamar Hunt of Dallas to
study ways and means of gaining
a better balance between the eight
clubs.
Lewis Qualls
The 7-0 junior center had his finest game of the 1961-62
season last Tuesday night at Waco when the Aggies edged
the Baylor Bears, 54-52. Qualls will be in the lineup when
A&M meets the SMU Mustangs Friday night at G. Rollie
White Coliseum. Game time is 8 p. m.
NFL Inks TV Deal
For $9.3 Million
By JACK HAND
Associated Press Sports Writer
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. OP)—The
National Football League signed
a two-year $9.3 million television
contract with a single network,
CBS, Wednesday under which each
of the 14 clubs will receive about
$320,000 a year.
Commissioner Pete Rozelle said
the only club that would receive
less for its TV rights was Balti
more, which worked with a dif
ferent network last season. Pitts
burgh, which also had a separate
deal, will receive about the same
as last year, Rozelle said.
“All the other clubs will receive
appreciably more,” he said. “AH
14 clubs are happy. Equality of
competition has been the greatest
single factor in the success of the
league.”
