RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer From every angle, the 1961 foot ball season was probably the most successful in Southwest Confer ence history. The league started out with an outstanding intersectional record —12 victories, 7 losses, 1 tie. The 16-3 victory Rice reg istered over Louisiana State was the only defeat suffered by the Tigers, who beat Mississippi and then won the Orange Bowl over Colorado in rather easy fashion. Texas Christian’s 7-7 tie with Ohio State was another highlight and it also was Texas Christian that beat Kansas 17-16. A pecularity of the campaign was this: Rise beat Louisiana State by 13 points, Texas beat Rice 34-7, Louisiana State beat Mississippi 10-7, yet Texas beat Mississippi 12-7. And still another quirk: Texas beats Rice by 27 points, Rice swamps Texas Christian 35-16. yet Texas Christian beats Texas 6-0. It just points up more than ever the equality of the nation’s col lege football. Any team is good enough to beat the heralded best on a certain occasion. It also shows just how tough i is for any team to be undefeated and untied in these times of in- | tense recruiting. The real payoff on the South west Conference’s strength na- | tionally came not only from the I Rice, Texas Christian and Texas [ victories in intersectional football j but the showing made by the league in the bowl games. There was a break-even with Baylor walloping Utah State 24-9 in the Gotham Bowl and Texas downing Mississippi 12-7 in the Cotton Bowl. The Kansas 33-7 strapping of Rice in the Bluebon net Bowl must be mentioned, if casually. It was another of those unusual happenings. Rice, as re called, easily beat Texas Christian, which had won over Kansas. Yet Kansas lashed Rice unmercifully.
