THE BATTALION
Aggies Drop First SWC Game, 64-59
Ai’kansas’ Razorbacks proved too
much for a fighting 1 A&M o.uintet
last night in Fayetteville as the
Aggies held the SWC’s top scorer,
Jerry Carlton, to only !2 points
but his teammates took up the
slack to win, 64-59.
All of Carlton’s points came in
the first half, but it was the top-
notch shooting of the Porker’s
Tommy Boyer and Jim Wilson that
proved fatal to the ill-fated Ag
gies.
The Aggies’ All-America, Car-
roll Broussard, appears completely
recovered from a back injury that
bothered him earlier in the season
my Smith and Bennie Lenox each
had eight points to their credit.
Once again it was the free
throws that killed A&M’s chances
for their seventh victory of the
season. The Cadets could manage
only 17 of 34 charity tosses for a
cold 50 per cent while the Hogs
were hitting on 24 of 29 free
throws for a hot 80 per cent.

In the field goal department,
the Aggies had 21 and Arkansas
was one behind with 20.
A crowd of over 5,000, the larg
est of the year at Fayetteville,
witnessed the game that see
sawed back and forth until seven
minutes remaining in the first
half when Carlton hit on two free
throws to put the Hogs ahead 18-
16—a lead that the Aggies never
regained even though they tied the
game three more times.
At the half, the Porkers led 26-
24 and the Aggies were very much
in the game, but during the second
half, Arkansas pulled away in the
clutches on fine, alert plays by
Larry Wofford and Wilson.

With only eight minutes left in
the second half, A&M’s Ron Dur-
bon sank a di’iving layup and the
Aggies were behind only one point
—47-48. The Razorbacks quickly
made nine points before the Cadets
could manage another point.
It was the ninth sti'aight victory
for Arkansas and their first in
Southwest Conference play. The
Aggies have a 6-4 record for the
season and are 0-1 in SWC compe
tition.
The next game for the Aggies
is Saturday night at G. Rollie

Pros Top Draft Choices Battle
In United States Bowl Sunday
By W. B. RAGSDALE JR.
WASHINGTON (A 5 ) — “We
don’t have the big names, but
we’ve got the boys the pros want
ed—the ones they drafted.”
Jim Castiglia, former George
town and Washington Redskin
fullback, was talking about his
bowl game—the U. S. Bowl.
The U.S. Bowl will match draft
choices of the East division of the
National Football League against
those chosen by teams in the West
division in D. C. Stadium Sunday.
The game will be televised na
tionally.
“For the average person,” said
Castiglia, U.S. Bowl president,
“there are only four or five big
names each year. After that he
gets lost. To a large extent our
teams were picked by the profes
sional talent scouts — the men
whose business it is to know good
football players.”
Workouts began Wednesday in
freezing weather.
Quarterbacking the East team
will be Galen Hall, star of Penn
State’s Gator Bowl winners, and
Bobby Hunt of Auburn.
Directing the attack of the West
squad will be George McKinney,
who played for Arkansas in the
Sugar Bowl, and Bobby Ply of
Baylor.
Other stars expected to play
Sunday are Arizona’s Joe Hernan
dez and Bobby I.ee, Clyde Brock
of Utah State and Benny McRae
of Michigan.
The game is sanctioned by the
National Collegiate Athletic Asso
ciation and' players taking part,
