Rollie White Coliseum when the Aggies meet the Lamar Tech Cardinals. Windham saw his first action of the season in the Memphis State contest. The 6-6, 213- pound junior from Hamilton was a big asset to the Aggies last year, especially in the rebounding department. INTRAMURALS Sqd. 8 took the freshman intra- mural basketball ^championship last night as they defeated D-3, 44-30. Two shutout football games were played in yesterday’s clear, crisp afternoon. In the Class B basketball finals last night, Jim Griffin and Paul Crank of Sqd. 8 dropped 12 points each to lead their outfit to the Corps championship. Bill Milam of D-3 was game high-point man with 16 and his teammate, David Dansby, had 12. Neither team was particularly sharp in its shooting. Sqd. 8’s height, which enabled them to claim most of the rebounds, made the difference. John Bush was Sqd. 8’s best man on- the boards. In Class A football yesterday E-l beat E-2, 6-0. Sqd. 12 blanked F-3, 16-0. A-l won by forfeit over B-3. In civilian football the Pan Americans forfeited to L,aw Hall. Yesterday’s bowling results are: E-2 over F-3, A-l over C-3, Sqd. 12 over D-l by forfeit and Sqd. 3 over Sqd. 11 by forfeit. Yesterday’s ping-pong: Maroon Band over Sqd. 14, C-2 over B-l and Sqd. 10 over C-l by forfeit. 42th Annual Texas Schoolboy Football Comes To Crashing Close This Week By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer The forty-second annual Texas schoolboy football race comes to a crashing close this week. There will v'be four state championships decided with Wichita Falls and Galena Park fighting for the top prize—the Class AAAA crown. The campaign hasn’t been much different from those of the past but it still has been the biggest event of the year in Texas. The scope of the Texas Interscholastic League is difficult to comprehend unless you are associated directly with it. Even then some of the figures that are authenticated by the League office sound like a Texas brags program. More than 900 schools have football teams, ranking from squads of 60 down to six-man football. Each season 8,000,000 paid admissions are recorded. Some of the high schools outdraw the minor colleges. Largest Crowd The largest crowd to ever see a high school football game in Texas came in 1945 when 47,000 jammed into the Cotton Bowl to watch Highland Park and Waco play a 7-7 tie. It would have been bigger but that was all the bowl held then. Once state champion ship games got more than 20,000 even if they were played on neu tral fields where most of the crowd was made up of fans from the two schools. The big crowds for the final games are no more, however, be cause there are four divisions and four state championship games. The four games will draw more combined than the one game they used to hold when there was a single division. It is amazing to see crowds of 15,000 to 20,000 turn out for □ Looks □ Personality O Intelligence Expect more, get more, from Lf# . v .'"'' y- ^ •*v- • ' There’s actually more rich-flavor leaf in L&M than even in some un filtered cigarettes. For in stance this week Dumas will travel from far up in the Pan handle down to Dallas to meet Nederland, which comes from Southeast Texas. Dallas is about midway between the two cities. It’s a safe bet that few people will be left in the two towns when the teams are playing in Dallas. Many Traditions There are many traditions in Texas schoolboy football. Ever since the early twenties, when the League first started, the schools have been trying to emulate Waco. That was the school that was in the finals six straight times and won four championships under the great coach Paul Tyson. No school yet has been able to equal Waco’s feat of being in the finals nine times from 1922 until 1948—27 years. Abilene and Wichita Falls are almost there— each has been in the finals eight times, counting Wichita Falls’ trip this season. Abilene already has bettered Waco’s championship record. Wa co has won five titles and tied for one. Abilene has won six. Next in line is Breckenridge, which has won four and tied for two but not all in one division. Wichita Falls Has Won Four Wichita Falls has won four, is favored to make it five this week. Amarillo has won four. Stamford set a record odf four championships in five years but had one of the titles taken away from it because of a rules viola tion. You can talk about the South- j but the biggest sports show in west Conference with its almost/Texas is the schoolboy football a milion and a half attendance I campaign.
