Kansas, Rice Meet First
Time In Bluebonnet Bowl
HOUSTON, Tex. 0T> — Kansas
and the Rice Owls meet the first
time in history, in Saturday’s
Bluebonnet Bowl, but Jack Mitch
ell, head coach of the Jsiyhawks,
is no stranger in Texas.
Mitchell was introduced to Tex
as fans in the late 1940’s as quar
terback of Bud Wilkinson's power
ful Oklahoma Sooners. He later
became coach at Arkansas and
brought his Razorbacks into Tex
as for three seasons of Southwest
Conference play.
While at Arkansas, Mitchell re
corded a 2-1 record against head
Coach Jess Neely of Rice. Two
of the three games were played
in the 70,000-seat Rice Stadium,
home of the Bluebonnet Bowl.
Mitchell’s performances with
Oklahoma against arch-rival Tex
as made lasting impressions par
ticularly on coaches. Few college
quartex’backs have taken defenses
apart as did Mitchell.
Blair Cherry, former coach at
Texas, once was asked to name
the newest thing in college foot
ball.
Cherry had been expected to
say something about Oklahoma’s
split T but he replied:
“The newest thing is that dog-
goned Mitchell, checking off his
plays at the line of scrimmage to
meet the defensive setup.”
Oklahoma’s split T was spread
ing havoc and Mitchell was among

AGED MILD, BLENDED MILD - NOT FILTERED MILD -THEY SATISFY
the first college quarterbacks to
call one play in the huddle and
then change it at the line of
scrimmage to another play that
woulli work better against the de
fensive pattern he found in front
of him.
Mitchell now has his Jayhawks
using the sliding slot T, which
blends single-wing off-tackle pow
er with the old split T option. It
also blends the wide run-pass op
tion.
The sliding slot T takes full ad
vantage of the abilities of John
Hadl, the Jayhawk quarterback.
Hadl is the Kansas leader in total
offense. His 44 pass completions
have accounted to 665 yards and
he has netted 283 yards in 128
rushing plays.
