THE BATTALION Fapfe G College Station, Texas Friday, December 8, 1061 i M m ‘Long Way To Go 9 —Rogers; Aggies Visit Memphis Stale “We have a long way to go!” Those were the words of Aggie Coach Bob Rogers after A&M rallied to overtake the Houston Cougars in a non-conference game here last Tuesday night. “I definitely did not expect to beat Houston by 15 points, but it certainly was a pleasant sur prise,” Rogers said. Rogers said that the Aggies are further behind at this stage of the season than any team he has coached at A&M. Sevei’al players received praise from the former Oklahoma State star. He thought Dave Johnson, the sophomore guai’d from San Antonio, played a good game, Dave Johnson . . . outstanding- defender especially on defense. The other Johnson boy, Benny, is a good player and is improving daily on defense, his weakest part of the game, said Rogers. The only thing Rogers could say about his terrific sophomore play- maker, Bennie Lenox, was: “He’s KILGORE RANGERS NEXT Lack Of Height Hindering Freshman Basketball Team The Fish basketball team is even in the win-loss column after two games, bouncing back from a 68- 62 defeat last week against Tyler JC to edge Kilgore 76-72 Tuesday night. Viewing his team’s winning per formance, Coach Shelby Metcalf feels the Fish played a fairly good ball game. Ball-handling was ragged and the Aggies lost the ball on numerous bad passes. On the other hand, rebounding was improved against Kilgore. The tor Ctotmai ^Jlte ^Ixchun^e St ore “Serving Texas Aggies” Frosh out-rebounded the Rangers 57-48. According to Coach Metcalf, poor rebounding was the reason Tyler won last Saturday. The Aggies shot 50 per cent from the field and 70 per cent from the free throw line against Tyler, but couldn’t control the boards enough to win. “Lack of size is going to give us trouble all year,” says Metcalf. “We’ve already run into trouble, against Tyler, for instance.” Fish starters, who average a little over 6-2 in height, are Paul Timmons of Clear Creek (5-11) and Jay Baker of Aldine (6-3) at guards; Tommy Bantle of Dallas Jesuit (6-2) and John McCurley of Port Arthur (6-2) at forwards; and Tim Timmerman of Houston Austin (6-6) at center. Baker led the team in scoring against Kilgore with 23 points. In addition, he picked off six re bounds. Timmerman and Bantle w r ere top rebounders for the game, grabbing off 13 each. Timmer man scored 11 points and Bantle ten. Timmons was runner-up in point-making with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. McCurley picked up six points and four re bounds. Coach Metcalf has two men he expects to be furnishing a lot of help within several weeks. David Glover of Abilene, a husky 6-2, 200-pounder, had an infected ear last week and didn’t make the trip to Tyler. Johnny Cole of Fair- field, a 6-1 guard, went out for freshman football and is a little behind the rest of the team. Tuesday night the Fish hit the road again, traveling to Kilgore for their second game with the Rangers. The Aggies improved consider ably in one department in the Houston game, according to the head coach. “We lost the ball only 11 times before getting a shot. This is a 50 per cent improvement over the Centenary game when we lost the ball 22 times while bringing it down the court,” Rogers said. Sunday the Aggies leave for Tennessee where they will meet “always-tough” Memphis State. It is an independent school and for the last four years has gone to the National Invitation Tournament in New York City. Next home game will be against Lamar Tech on Dec. 16. “This Aggie team is coming along slowly and it’s just going to take time. That’s why we are play ing these non-conference games,” Rogers concluded. INTRAMURALS Sqd. 8, D-3 and Sqd. 2 won their quarter-final intramural basket ball games last night and earned the right to vie in the semifinals Monday night for a berth in the Wednesday finals and the fresh man championship. In a hotly contested game, Sqd. 8 nosed out Sqd. 7, 43-39. The last four minutes of the game saw little scoring as mos‘t of the time was consumed by attempts to steal the ball and to control the ball by both teams. Paul Crank of Sqd. 8 had top-scoring honors with 14 points and his teammate, John Bush, had 11. John Starek and Bob Boyett of Sqd. 7 had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Sqd. 8 will meet Sqd. 1, which received a bye in the drawing, in the semifinals Monday night. D-3 defeated A-l, 36-24 and won a berth against Sqd. 2 Monday night. David Dansby of D-3 led the quarter-final scoring with 16 points. Marvin Hopgood of A-l had 8. Sqd. 2 beat Sqd. 4, 21-12. Sqd. 2’s Cecil Fleming was high-point man with 10. ★, The Bright Gift The Right Gift * RECORDS FROM SHAFFER’S * • Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians St3SI kfiRtOR * The Meaning of Christmas •.Start • a. . . . . . . o.
