Ags Sending Books
To Temple Hospital
Second Mrs. Texas A&M...
Did you ever wonder what to do ; and the magazines would
with your old magazines and« their way soon,
paper-backs? Many times they
wind up in the hall trash cans or
just cast aside somewhere.
be on
Nine years ago some Aggies had
a similar problem, and did some
thing about it. They got together
with the Corps Staff and the
Civilian Student Council and gave
them their idea.
They rounded up all the maga
zines and paper-backs that stu
dents were through with and sent
them to McClosky Hospital in
Temple. Transportation was al
ready available. Earl Mercer, a
Navasota resident, had made a
.personal project of getting maga
zines from that area and taking
them to the hospital. He would
take all the Aggies could get.
So Corps students handed their
magazines to their first sergeants
and civilians gave theirs to two
men appointed in each dorm.
Bennie Zinn and the Director of
Student Affairs Office were located
in Goodwin Hall at the time, and
there was plenty of storage room.
When sufficient magazines were
collected, Zinn would write Mercer,
For two years the magazines
poured in, according to Zinn, al
most faster than they could be
hauled away. Then the supply
began to tickle off. The last seven
years only 500 magazines have
been sent each six weeks. A few
civilian dorms and the apartment
areas have remained faithful to
the task.
And the patients at the hospital
enjoyed the magazines. They said
so, through the staff of the hos
pital, in letters sent to Zinn pf
thanking the students of A&M for
their contribution.
There are very likely many more
students subscribing to Life, Look,
Readers Digest, Time, Newsweek,
Cornet, Sports Illustrated, Sports
Afield, and magazines of the type,
as well as buying many paper
backed novels and books which are
read once and discarded.
Zinn is still acting as the col
lector for these magazines from
his office in the basement of the
YMCA, and said he will see that
all magazines brought to him will
reach the hospital.

most smoking pleasure
in a filter cigarette?
There’s actually more
rich-flavor leaf in L&M
than even in some un
filtered cigarettes. You
get more body in the

smoke, more taste
through the filter. So get
