GRUDGE RENEWED
Fish, Shorthorns
Battle Tomorrow
Memorial Stadium in Austin
will be the site Wednesday after
noon of the annual grudge game
between the Texas Shorthorns and
the Aggie Fish.
The game will feature two fresh
man teams that are counterparts
of their respective varsity elders.
The Fish have won half their
games this year, as has the Var
sity. Coach Ty Bain’s first-year
men have defeated Rice 7-0 and
the Houston Kittens, 7-6. Baylor
bounced the Fish 19-7 and TCU’s
Wogs romped to a 27-12 victory.
Like their varsity teammates,
the Aggie freshmen use their full
backs up the middle and their
halfbacks around the ends to gar
ner rushihg yardage. Thus far in
four games the Fish have used
their aerial game sparingly, hav
ing passed for only one touch
down. Defensively, the Fish are
strong in the middle of the line
and at linebacker, two positions
at which the varsity is also strong.
Biggest defensive weakness has
been at end.
Texas Attack
Utilizing a smashing ground
attack, liberally sprinkled with
passes, the Shorthorns are a min
iature version of the team football
fans will see Thursday on Kyle
Field. Like the varsity, which
lost to TCU 6-0 Saturday, the
Shorthorns have lost one game
this year, a 16-15 squeaker with
SMU. The Texas fx-eshmen are
tough on defense, having lost only
one game in the past four years.
Two of last year’s most cele
brated schoolboy stars make up
half the Shorthorns’ starting back-
field. Ernie Koy Jr. and Joe Ed
Lynn of Bellville, both weighing
over 200 pounds, furnish power
running from the fullback and
halfback positions.
The Fish have not beaten the
Shorthorns since John Crow and
the Southwest Conference Cham
pions of 1956 were freshmen in
1954. That same aggregation
teamed up to beat the Texas var
sity 34-21 in 1956, which is the
last time the Aggie vai’sity de
feated Texas.
Mike Kohlman, the Fish full
back, has been the leading ground
gainer. He has rushed for 198
yards in 53 carries for an aver
age of 3.73 yards per carry. The
team’s second leading rusher is
Halfback Tommy Meeks, who has
an identical average of 3.73, with
97 yards on 26 carries.
Meeks also leads the team in
scoring with three touchdowns,
and is the top kickoff returner
with five returns for 109 yards
and 21.8 yards per effort. He is
the number one pass receiver, hav
ing caught five for 58 yax-ds and
one touchdown.
Karl Sweetan, the number one
quarterback, leads the team in
passing with eight completions in
28 attempts for 76 yards. He is
also the punter and has kicked 28
times for 938 yards and a 35.1
yard average.
Mike Pitman leads the team in
punt returns with three for 62
yards and one touchdown. He
took a Houston kick on his own
50-yaxd line 'and returned it for
the ( winning touchdown against
the Kittens.
The Fish will leave Wednesday
morning for Austin and will re
turn that night after the ball
game.

THE BATTALION

SWC Title
A&M won the Southwest Con
ference cross-country meet yes
terday by taking three of the
first five places.
E. L. Ener of the Aggies was
first in 14:11.8 over the 3-mile
course with Jan Ahlberg of
Southern Methodist, twice cham
pion, secoixd in 14:20.1. Ilhan
Bilgutay of A&M was third in
14:31.9,
Ener won a stretch duel from
Ahlberg, taking the lead in the
last 20 yards and scoring with
a stronger kick.
A&M had 27 points, SMIT was
second with 39, Texas third with
73 and Arkansas fourth with 78.
Turkey Day Grudge Game
Scheduled Here Thursday
Two of football history’s oldest
rivals will meet again Thursday at
1:30 p. m. on Kyle Field when the
potent Texas Longhorns meet the
injury-ridden Aggies.
Texas sports a star-studded,
glamour team that has spent three
weeks of this season on top of the
ratings in college football. A&M
will field a team with many vacan
cies due to injuries, but determina
tion to fill them.
The rivalry began in 1894 when
Texas won, 38-0, and there have
been 68 meetings of the two teams.
Texas has won 45, A&M 17, and
there have been five ties. Last
year, in Memoxial Stadium in Aus
tin, the Aggies battled back brave
ly after trailing, 21-0, only to be
disappointed by a Longhorn vic-
tox-y, 21-14.
Texas, which remained unbeaten
and in the top ten throughout the
season, fell last Saturday to keyed-
up TCU, 6-0. The Longhorns are
tied with Arkansas for first in the
Conference. A&M is in fourth
place, behind the Rice Owls.
Authoi’ities on Southwest Con
ference football will tell you that
there can never really be a favor
ite in the Thanksgiving classic.
This game, no matter what the
national or conference standings
are, is always the highlight of the
season for both schools. Each team
is keyed up and the only safe
final-score prediction is one made
with one second left in the game
itself.
This year’s game, at which
42,000 spectators are expected
(Kyle Field’s capacity), will be no
different than those in the past.
The spectacle will be beamed
across the coxmtry on ABC tele
vision network.
Said Aggie Coach Jim Myers of
the Longhorns, “Texas is a ball
club with gi'eat speed, strength,
size, depth and balance. Don’t let
that 6-0 xxpset to TCU fool you,
for the Longhorns are tremendous,
We’ll have to play exceptional
football to be able to stay on the
field with them.”
Leading ground gainer and scor.
er in the conference, James Saxton
of Texas, will be a real threat to
the Aggies. Longho'rn end Bot
Moses was last week’s “Lineman
of the Week”. Not-unpublicized
Mike Gotten will quarterback most
of the afternoon for Texas. It is
still not known if Texas’ great full
back, Ray Poage will be back in
action.

her an Aggie Mum for the Turkey Day Game.
