The project, which began the first of the month, is under the direc tion of Dr. Donald W. Hood, while the principal research scientist is Mrs. Carter Litchfield. The three-year project studying matter in the Gulf of Mexico by microbiological assay will use Ser- ratia marinorubra, a marine bac terium, by subjecting it to ultra violet irradiation. This will kill 75-95 per cent of the marihorubra, depending on the length of time that it is irradiated. The remaining bacteria will be biochemically deficient and used in the assay. Comparison of different amounts of growth with differing concentrations of the required or ganic compounds will be made, Mrs. Litchfield explained. Then when the bacterial mutant is grown in sea water, the amount of growth in this unknown source can be correlated with growth in known concentrations. Thus, re searchers can determine how much of a certain compound is in sea water. Once a large representative group of biochemically deficient strains of marinorubra has been BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES lie dtr .... . . . . 14 per wort Id per word each additional day Minimum charge—40d DEADLINE FOR SALE HELP WANTED »re pat CUiurifted Display SO* per column inch each insertion PHONE VI 6-641S FOR RENT Two bedroom unfurnished hi llftely redecorated.
