Questions Raised On Megaton Bomb % •“• ^ *• < y'■‘V is « ••■ ' ■• jj mth ;^y ; v.....v:;>|.-.> MOSCOW O’P) — Accounts in the official Sovet press raised a question Wednesday as to exactly what Soviet Premier Khrushchev said about setting - off a 50-mega ton bomb. The question: Is the Soviet Union actually going to do so or is it just a probability ? The official press, including the party newspaper Pravda, quoted Khrushchev as telling the 22nd Soviet party congress Tuesday: In conclusion of current nuclear tests we shall probably explode a hydrogen bomb equivalent to 50 million tons of TNT.” In a later paragraph, as quoted by Pravda, Khrushchev seemed to drop the qualification. At least four Western reporters who listened to his speech did not hear the “probably”; two said they did. The speech was translated si multaneously into 29 languages, and some of the correspondents 9c PER PRINT Black & White Snapshots A&M PHOTO North Gate listened to translations conveyed by earphones, some to the origi nal Russia. One who understands Russian well and listened to the Russian version said he did not hear the qualification. The statement was not part of Khrushchev’s prepared text, and was not published here until late Tuesday night, presumably after Soviet editors received guidance. According to Pravda this was the way Khrushchev said it: “These, tests will soon be complet ed by us—evidently by the end of October. “In conclusion, we shall prob ably explode a hydrogen bomb equivalent to 50 million tons of TNT. “We have said that we have a bomb equal to 100 million tons of TNT. And this is true. “But we shall not explode such a bomb . . . But in exploding a bomb equal to 50 million tons of TNT, we are thereby also testing a device for the explosion of the bomb equal to 100 million tons of TNT.” The official Soviet news agency Tass gave a slightly dif ferent version. Its summary included this para graph: “Khrushchev said the tests would probably end with the explosion of a hydrogen bomb with a yield equivalent to 50 mil lion tons of TNT. . . By touching off a 50-megaton bomb we shall test the device for triggering a 100-megaton bomb.” THE BATTALION Thursday, October 19, 1961 College Station, Texas Page ft FEATURED IN MAGAZINE Aggie Customs Find Place In ‘Doc’ Bird well’s Heart Aggies’ Loyal Birdwell Come good or bad times, Carl (Doc) Birdwell, manager of the Exchange Store, stands ready to assist students at the college-operated business. By RON TREAT Battalion Staff Writer Carl (Doc) Birdwell, manager of the Exchange Store, was featured in the August issue of the College Stoi’e Journal, a national trade magazine for college and univer sity stores throughout the United States. Serving as Exchange Store man ager for the past 15 years, “Doc” has made many friends and an swered many requests from his customers—some of which are very peculiar. One of these requests, he re cant'd, came in the fall of 1950 when the Cadet Colonel of the Corps asked him if he could get 4,500 pair of white parade gloves which had been adopted as part of the uniform the night before. The corps commander told “Doc” he wanted the gloves for the pa rade in Austin for the Thanksgiv ing Day game which was about a week away. “Doc,” remembering a dealer in New York, called the man and arranged to get the gloves in time for the game. The last of the shipment came in on Thursday morning but a supply officer was waiting, ready to take them to Austin. So the Corps was able to make the parade in white gloves that year, thanks to “Doc” Bird- well. An amiable person, “Doc” is al ways willing to sit back and talk with visitors and those people bringing strange requests. This is, of course, in addition to his regular duties of checking invoices and all other things necessary to running a college store. In his many years of experi ence, Bijrdwell- has found that stu dent customers usually are honest. If they don’t have enough money for a package of cigarettes, for example, they are asked to “drop by tomorrow” with the money. Very little has been lost and many a friend has been gained. On one occasion a boy, who had at one time stolen a fountain pen from the store, wrote “Doc” after grad uation and apologized with a $10 bill. Since 1949, the Exchange Store has contributed over $260,000 from its profits for student welfare and recreation, band trips and uni forms, student activities and a host of other services. The man who is pax^tly respon sible for this is “Doc” Bii-dwell, who thinks his employees and col lege student customers are “the finest people in the world.” SPECIAL COMPLIMENTARY OFFER FOR COLLEGE MEN Learn the Pleasures of Fine Tobacco...
