By New York Mets
NKW YORK <7P)—-The New
York Mets added another familiar
face to their roster for the 1962
National League baseball season
Saturday.
They bought Billy Loes, former
Dodgers pitcher, from the San
Francisco Giants for an undis
closed sum.
Loes, 32, a righthander, was
plucked by the Dodgers from a
New York high school in 1946 as
a $21,000 bonus baby. His best
years with the Dodgers were 1952
when he had a 13-8 mark and 1954
when he won 13 and lost 5.

Michigan State’s smashing vic
tory over Michigan—achieved be

—has shot the Spartans to the
top of the Associated Press weekly
football poll.
The Big! Ten power, 28-0 winner
over its highly rated state rival,
edged Mississippi out of the No. 1
position in close balloting although
Ole Miss received the greater
number of first-place votes. Mis
sissippi beat Houston 47-7.
The panel of sports writers and
broadcasting experts gave Michi
gan State a total of 431 points
and Mississippi 429. This meant
Mississippi received 21 first-place
votes compared with 16 for the
Spartans. The Spartans drew
stronger general support.
The poll is based on 10 points
for a first-place vote, 9 for second
and on down the line.
The rest of the top 10 also un
derwent considerable change. Tex
as, the Southwest scourge which
has won four in a row, moved to
no. 3. Then followed, in order:

Dame; 7. Ohio State; 8. Georgia

Colorado, which edged Miami, Fla.

Neely pulled a switch on his Rice
Owls and put the No. 2 and No. 3
teams through an hour’s scrim
mage Monday.
Neely usually lets the second
team join the first for a movie
session on Mondays, but the sec
ond squad saw little action Satur
day in Rice’s come-from-behind
19-10 victory over Florida.
Johnny Nichols, still favoring an
injured ankle, was the only mem
ber of the second unit missing
action.
Dan Malin, starting center, in
jured his knee Saturday and may
not make the game with Southern
Methodist in Houston Saturday.
Guard Walt Ligon, who missed
the past two games, may return
to practice later this week.
ROME <TP>—Nicola Pietrangcli
struck the knockout blow Monday
as Italy again crushed U.S. Davis
Cup tennis hopes in interzone fi
nal. The Italians won, 4-1.
Pietrangeli sewed up the Italian
victory by beating Jon Douglas,
from Santa Monica, 9-7, 6-3, 6-2,
in the first of the final singles
matches at the Rome Tennis Club.
Fausto Gardini, the Italian
chamipon, beat Whitney Reed of
Alameda, Calif., in a marathon
battle which lasted three hours
and five minutes. The score was
3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 8-6, 6-4.

ors of the Americans last year in
Australia, again go into the chal
lenge round against Australia at
Melbourne in late December.
Until beaten in the interzone fi
nal at Perth last year, the United
