Ag’s Rated Real Contenders
As Basketball Season Nears
By HAROLD RATLIFF
Associated Press Sports Writer
The roupd-ballers — basketball
to you — will come out of the
crevices next week and the South
west Conference will look toward
one of its better years on the
court.
The teams are permitted to
start practice Oct. 15 but can’t
play a game until Dec. 2.
The league should make a good
showing in intersectional basket
ball this time, something it hasn’t
done since Southern Methodist al
most got into the NCAA finals
four years ago.
Just about everybody who

starred in 1961 will be back, in
cluding that great one-two punch
of Texas Tech — Del Ray Mounts
and Harold Hudgens.
Broussard Returns
Seven of the top scorers will re
turn, including the brilliant Car-
roll Broussard of Texas A&M,
who led them all. Hudgens was
second and Mounts was third. Jan
Loudermilk of Southern Method
ist, Donnie Lasiter of Texas, Mike
Maroney of Rice and Phil Reynolds
of Texas Christian, sixth, seventh,
eighth and ninth in the scoring
race, are back.
There are plenty of big men
with experience. One of them is
Lewis Qualls of Texas A&M, the
first 7-footer in conference his
tory. Qualls was doing well in
deed at the end of the season and
should be quite a hand with the
Aggies this winter.
Ags Are Real Contender
A&M, incidentally, should be a
real contender for the champion
ship. It has a strong nucleus of
veterans and some excellent soph
omore and junior college transfer
pi’ospects.
Texas Tech, however, will be
favored to repeat with its Mounts,
Hudgens, Bobby Gindorf, Roger
Hennig, Mac Percival, et al.
Texas, with some good men up
from the freshmen, and Rice,
which made a glittering finish last
season afte* starting out with
probably the most dismal pros
pects in the league, look like real
contenders.
SMU Will Make Run
Southern Methodist is destined
to make a strong rpn for it with
a veteran team and some top pros
pects like Mike Marsh of Midland
and Gene Elmore of Houston. Tex
as Christian is back almost intact,
Arkansas looks tough and Baylor
ought to be improved.
There will be two new coaches
—Bill Menefee succeeding Bill
Hendei’son at Baylor and Gene
Gibson taking over for Polk Robi
son at Texas Tech. Henderson
and Robison resigned because they
had so many other duties. Hen
derson was business manager of
athletics, assistant director and
basketball coach. Robison has be
come athletic director at Tech and
just can’t find the time to coach
the basketball team.

Aggies Renew 5 9-Year Old
Trinity Series Saturday
When the Aggies take the field
in San Antonio’s Alamo Stadium
Saturday night against Trinity, it
will be the 21st meeting of the
two teams since the first game
was played in 1902.
A&M has won 17 games, Trinity
has won one game, and two ended
in ties. Trinity’s victory came in
1903, when they defeated the
Farmers 18-0.
Biggest Aggie victory margin
was in 1915, when Trinity was
trampled 62-0. Three games have
been played since the early 1930’s
—in 1933, A&M winning 38-0; in
1953, A&M winning 53-14; in 1960,
A&M winning 14-0.
Thus far this year the Tigers
are batting at a .500 clip, winning
one and losing one in two outings.
Trinity beat McMurray 19-0, and
then lost to powerful Texas A&I,
26-13.
Coach Jim Myers is expecting
a good game Saturday night. Ac
cording to Coach Myers, “Trinity
has a good ball club, sparked by
an exceptionally good passing at
tack triggered by three fine quar
terbacks. They have a much bet
ter team than last year. We’re
not looking ahead and not taking
Trinity lightly — we hope to be
ready for what could prove a, very
tough ballgame.”
Reviewing the Aggies’ 38-7
stampede over Texas Tech last
week, Myers commented, “It was
our best effort of the year. Tech
was playing at home and was
fired up, but our players respond
ed with a great effort.”
The Cadets will go against Trin
ity without the services of three
players. Sophomore Halfback
George Hargett sustained a shoul
der bruise against Tech and will | ably miss at least two more weeks,
likely not play against Trinity. Guard Mike Swan has a bruised
Guard Jim Harper is still ailing thigh and will probably miss his
