Pnffo tf Colleffp Station, Texas Thursday, October 15, THE BATTALION WOGS HE A VIER Ag Frosh Open Season Tonight Against Wogs By BOB ROBERTS Battalion Assistant Sports Editor The Texas Aggie Fish football ers meet the TCU Wogs on Kyle Field tonight at 7:30. The game will be Coach Ty Bain’s inaugural as head mentor of the Fish. Coach Bain’s Fish will average 178 pounds in the backfield, and 202 pounds in the line. The fresh men will give a weight advantage to the Wogs, who average 216 in the line and about 189 in the back- field. Three high school all-state play ers will be in the starting lineup for Bain. They include Tackle Ronny Moore of Brownwood, Guard Melvin Simmons of Odessa and Halfback Tommy Meeks 'of Bryan. Two other all-staters are on the injured list, Halfback Budgie Ford of Taylor and Guard Ray Thin-Clads Go To Houston Saturday It’s autumn time and almost everyone would think that track season is over, but cross country season is here again! While the Aggie footballers will be in Lubbock Saturday, the Ag gie runners will be in Houston taking on the University of Hous ton cross country team. Houston was ' the NCAA cross country champion last year. Last year the Aggie team took second place at the Southwest Con ference Meet and Coach Jim Brewer expects a stronger squad this fall. The reason for the added strength will be Ilhan Bilgutay, a sophomore from Istanbul, Tur key, who was ineligible last year and Ed Weber, a junior transfer from Victoria Junior College. Thad Crooks, the co-captain of the Aggie track team last spring, is back and will supply help. A strong challenger, Crooks is holder of two school track records—the mile and the two-mile runs. Other members of the Aggie cross country team are E. L. Ener, a junior from Jasper; Malcolm Hardee, a senior from Groveton; Thomas Johnson, a senior from Franklin; and Bill Doreen, a soph omore from Midland. “Bilgutay is the number one runner on the team and I along with Coach Charlie Thomas expect great things from him,” said Brew er. The freshmen will also have a meet v/ith the Cougars Saturday and they will be led by Herbie Campbell and Jim Sebastian. Main TA 2-6000 Bailie Of Winless Set For Lubbock Ben Krenek . . . ready for Tech Redlegs Blasted Ags ’07 In March of 1907, the Cincin nati Reds had better luck with the Texas A&M baseball team than they had with the New York Yankees in the first game of the World Series yesterday. The Reds handily downed the Aggies 9-0 in an exhibition game on campus. All the Cin cinnati runs were scored in the third inning when the Aggies went to pieces. The losest the A&M man aged to come to a score was in the third inning before the Reds broke loose. Cadet Hue was left stranded on third after a short, short Aggie rally. The Cincinnati team commented that the two and one half hour game was quite an odd experi ence because of the college yells and Aggie enthusiasm during the game. After tying Houston and losing to LSU in tight iritersectional foot ball clashes, the Aggies move into the Southwest Conference scene Saturday. Coach Jim Myers takes his Ag gies to Lubbock to do battle with Texas Tech’s Red Raiders at Jones Stadium at 7:30 p. m. More than 35,000 tickets have been sold to the contest and Tech athletic officials except a near capacity turnout of 40,500. A&M will enter the game with a 0-0 SWC mark while Tech found a rampaging group of Longhorns too much last week and lost its league opener by 42-14. The Aggies tied the University of Houston, 7-7, and then last Saturday night bowpd to LSU, 16-7, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Myers sent the A&M team through a long scrimmage Tuesday against Red Raider offenses and defenses, and announced more of the same for Wednesday. The Aggies will begin tapering off drills Thursday and have a limbering up workout at Lubbock Friday afternoon following a 2 p. m. flight (Braniff) from College Station. Barring practice injuries, the Aggies should be in good shape for Saturday’s encounter. Ben Krenek, junior letteiunan from El Campo, has returned to his spot at second team left tackle after having missed the first two encounters with a knee injury. Still out of action, however, is Guard Jim Hai’per of Borger, who is nursing a leg injury. He was a member of the second unit. A&M’s probable starters, all openers against LSU, will include Russell Hill and Daryle Keeling at ends, Wayland Simmons and Joe Eilers' at tackles, Wayne Freiling and Jim Phillips at guards, Jerry] Jenkins at center. Jim Keller quarterback, George Hargett land Boh Caskey at halfbacks and Lee Roy Caffey at fullback. Changes in the second unit have Sam Byer moving in at fullback, Krenek at tackle, Keith Huggins at guard and Bobby Evans, a con verted end, at tackle. Pat Latham and Bobby Hunting- ton will be at ends, Walter La. Crone at guard, Jerry Hopkins at Volume \ Center, John Erickson at quarter-! back and Jim Linnstaedter and Travis Reagan at halfbacks. Linnstaedter is A&M’s leading, ground gainer with 58 yards in 13 carries, while Caffey has 50 in 14 and Fullback Jerry Rogers 4] in 18. Erickson has completed four of eight passes for 48 yards and one touchdown. Reagan is the leading receiver, having caught two passes for 33 yards and one TD. The Aggie Band will make the trip to Lubbock. 9c PER PRINT Only For Black & White Snapshots A&M PHOTO North Gate SPECIALS—THUR. - FRL - SAT.
