Gibbs, Cook Leading SWC
In Total Offense, Rushing
Texas Christian’s Sonny Gibbs
and Texas’ Jerry Cook maintained
leadership for total offense and
ball-carrying honors respectively
in the Southwest Conference
through two games, but Doug Can
non, a young sophomore from Tex
as Tech, has moved ahead of a tal
ented group of veteran throwers
to emerge as the leading passer.
Cannon salvaged some consola
tion for himself and the Red Raid
ers by completing 13 of 24 at
tempts for 114 yards as Tech fell
to Texas. This gave him 15 com
pletions in 27 attempts for the
season and a gain of 134 yards.
Billy Cox of Rice, the leader last
week, dropped to sixth place, while
Gibbs moved up to second by com
pleting 7 of 12 in the 7-7 tie with
Ohio State.
Cook yielded some of the lime
light to Teammate Roy Poage, who
was the week’s leading ball carrier,
but the Longhoim junior from Ga
lena Park held on to the lead for
the season. He carried 13 times
for 84 yards against Texas Tech
for an aggregate of 194 yards in
26 bids through two games.
James Saxton, who raced 78
yards for one of Texas’ six touch
downs, held on to the runner-up
spot, while Ronnie Bull of Baylor
moved up to third with another
topflight performance. Texas.’
stable of swift backs have hogged
four of the top six places amo*ig
the ball-carrying leaders, with
Poage, who gained 104 against
Tech, and Sophomore Tommy Ford
joining in the select circle.
Ags, Raiders
Both Winless
After two games and not a
win in the standings, the Aggies
hit the road again this week in
search for their first victory.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders
will be the Cadets* opponent and
they, too, have yet to win one.
Last week in Austin the Texas
Longhorns trampled the Red
Raiders with a 42-14 victory.
The score could have been worse!
Matt Lair, former A&M de
fensive line coach and now coach
at Tech, had only one comment,
"They kind of embarrassed us,
didn’t they?”
Good news hit the Aggie camp
yesterday as they went through
a rugged workout—second team
left tackle, Ben Krenek, has re
turned from the injured list and
will be ready for Tech.

have been known to become employers. A freshman wants, above all, to be
inaugurated into your world. Walk him to class, teach him longhand, explain

college students smoke more Luckies than any other regular). You’ll be a
