Debate Team
Organizes
For Meet
The A&M Discussion and Debate
Club made plans for the coming
debate season at its first meeting
of the year Monday.
Presiding at the meeting was
Dr. H. E. Hierth, associate pi'o-
fessor in the Department of Eng
lish, who will act as debate coach
for the club.
Compe'ition this year will in
clude tournaments at TCU, Bay
lor, Texas Tech, Tuscon, Ariz.,
Hattiesburg, Miss, and A&M’s own
invitational tournament.
The college debate question to be
discussed is: “Resolved: that
labor unions should come under
the jurisdiction of anti-trust legis
lation.”

Any A&M student desiring to
upply for a Rhodes Scholarship
must do so before Oct. 10. R. H.
Ballinger of the Department of
English is the college representa
tive for the scholarships.
A long and involved selection
procedure as well as stringent
personal and academic qualifica
tions must be met by applicants.
A student here must be recom
mended by President Earl Rudder
to a state selection committee.
This committee, which will meet
Dec. 13, will nominate tw’o candi
dates to the district selection com
mittee.
Four winners will be chosen
from this district, which also in
cludes Alabama, Mississippi, Lou
isiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Personal qualifications are that
a student be a male, unmarried
and between 18 and 24 years of
age. At least junior standing in
some degree granting university
is required.
No restriction is placed upon a
Rhodes scholar’s choice of stud
ies. All studies are taken at the
University of Oxford in England.
According to the scholarship
brochure “quality of both charac
ter and intellect is the most im
portant requirement for a Rhodes
Scholarship.”
There have been only tw r o previ
ous A&M Rhodes scholars.

er’s College and Jack E. Brooks,
’47, is now on the technical staff
of Ramo-Woolridge Corp.
