KELLER SCORES FOR AGS
New Season? Another Tie!
Ags And Cougars Knot, 7-7
BY LARRY SMITH
Battalion Sports Editor
The Texas Aggie football squad
played a mediocre song last year
with all its ties, and the new sea
son was opened with the same
song but only a different verse.
Against the Cougars from the
University of Houston, the Cadets
played a very respectable game
and whipped the 11th ranked team
in the nation in almost every de
partment on the statistics sheet.
But still the score stood 7-all
when the final seconds ticked off
the clock on the south end of Kyle'
Field.

2 Talks Here
Dr. H. R. Bird, chairman of the
University of Wisconsin Depart
ment of Poultry Husbandry and
widely known nutritionist, will lec
ture here Oct. 2.
Subject of his talk is “Is Nutri
tion at the Crossroads Or On a
Deadend Street?” The public has
been invited to hear the talk,
which is sponsored by the graduate
school and set for 8 p.m. in Room
113 of the Biological Sciences
Building.
Bird also will be a speaker at
the annual Texas Nutrition Con
ference Oct. 4-6.
For the Aggies, it was a night
for two doubles—Jims and San
Antonio. One of the two’s was
for Jim Keller and Jim Linnstaedt-
er who performed brilliantly in
this their first varsity football
game. Keller, the 6-5 quarterback
from Terrell, played in his first
college contest and his poise >vas
amazing. He called his plays with
cool confidence and carried them
out like a veteran field general.
Linnstaedter sparkled on several
of his 10 carries that netted him
53 yards. One of these runs (a
17-yard sweep around right end)
brought visions of an Aggie Jim
Saxton.
and the TD. Eddie Mitchamore
added the PAT.
The third quarter was all A&M
as the Cougars could only man
age one first down. Again the Ca
dets threatened the Cougar’s goal,
but two incomplete passes from
the Houston six ended it.
Finally late in the third and
early in the fourth quarters, the
Ags started their march. Behind
the passing and running of Keller
and the clutch sweeps by Jim Mur
phy, they reached the Houston two
where Keller sneaked over for the
touchdown.
The other double was for the
hometown of Wayne Freiling and
Wayland Simmons who played to
the ultimate in the Cadet line.
Freiling, the Aggie captain, closed
many holes on the right side of
the defensive line when the Cou
gars tried to send Fullbacks Lar
ry Broussard or Bobby Brezina
jutting through the line. Simmons,
the alternate captain, put constant
pressm'e on UH quarterbacks Don
Sessions and Billy Roland.
In the first half, the Aggies
threatened to score once only to
have that threat killed by a fum
ble on the Houston three.
After an exchange of punts in
the second quarter, the Cougars
recovered an Aggie fumble on the
A&M 8-yard line and quickly con
verted the break into their only
tally for the night. Ken Bolin,
the 164-pound mighty mite, squirt
ed over right end for four yards

Now came the most important
decision of the night—go for the
two or one point conversion. The
Ags went for the extra point from
the toe of Daryle Keeling, who
played tremendous at right end.
The main reason for the one point
conversion was that the Aggies
had been moving the ball excep
tionally well and it seemed at that
time they would have another shot
at the goal. But as it was, the
clock ran out first. ,
All in all, it’s much better to
have a tie game from a powerful
team as Houston than to go down
to another bitter defeat!
In grading the films of the
Houston game, the Aggie coaches
voted outstanding honors to Linn
staedter, Keller, Jerry Rogers, and
Bob Caskey in the baekfield and
Simmons, Freiling, Bull Phillips
and Buddy Filers in the line.
Coach Myers praised the work
of newcomer John Erickson who
alternated with Keller at the man-
under spot.
