Means of conducting- highway
traffic surveys by use of an in
frared radiation detector was the
subject of a graduate research pro
ject recently completed at Texas
Transportation Institute of Texas
A&M for the Texas Highway De
partment.
Aim of the investigation was to
find a detector which would over
come the limitations of ’ air im
pulse road tubes used in traffic
survey systems. The study was
made by W. F. Mundkowsky, grad
uate student in electrical engineer
ing from Taylor, under the super
vision of E. N. Roots, assistant
professor of electrical engineering;
C. J. Keese, professor of civil en
gineering - , and Dr. R. E. Wainerdi,
assistant to the dean of engineer
ing.
A photoelectromagnetic detector
proved the more effectual of the
two detectors tried in the study.
The detector, placed in the road
bed, picks up infrared rays from
the heated underside of a moving
automobile to count the vehicle ip
a traffic survey.
Extensive road testing must be
carried out, however, to determine
the response of the detector to var
ious types of highway vehicles at
various speeds, and to eliminate
the effects of atmospheric and
road conditions which might “trig
ger” the detector at the wrong
times. Another problem still to
