Danny Roberts May Become
?
Best Weightman In Nation

track coach Charlie Thomas’ hair

he is not worried because he has
potentially, one of the best weight-
men in the nation in big Danny
Roberts.
Twenty—year-old Danny is only
a freshman this year, but to look
at him one would think that he
yhs a pro football tackle. Stand
ing at 6-4i/ 2 , Danny tips the scales
at an even 240 pounds.
. A product of Cleveland High
School, Danny close A&M over the
other schools who were after him
because many of his friends from
Cleveland were coming to Aggie-
land, one being his present room-
rate.
, “Coach Thomas came to see me
quite a bit, too, and I liked him
a- lot,” Danny remarked.
: Danny, who has been lifting
^eights for only one year, is a
prominent figure around the G.

Coach Emil Mamaliga since last
Star while visiting the campus as
a prospect.
“I was visiting the campus last
year and Mamaliga gave me a pro
gram to follow and I’ve been on
it ever since,” Danny explained. “It
has sure put some weight on me!”
In the meet in Houston last
Saturday Danny was high point
man for the Fish with 14 points.
He set two records in the fresh
men division, one in the shot put
with a throw of 53-9 and in the
discus with a toss of 156-101/2. So
far this season in practice Danny
has put the shot over 56 feet and
has thrown the discus over 170
feet.
Although Danny likes the shot
put and discus better than the
javelin, he has looked very good
this season with his javelin throws.
This year is the first time he has
ever thrown the javelin and he has
aheady thrown it 204 feet in com
petition and over 210 feet in prac
tice.
“I don’t like the javelin as much
as I do the shot and discus,” Danny
said. “I guess that I like the shot
first, the discus second and thq
javelin last.”
The dream of any boy's life is
to go to the Olympics and that is
Danny’s one big goal now,
“I am going to lift weights and
do a lot of running this summer
because I would like to get up to
about 255 pounds,” Danny stated.
“It would help my throwing more.”

SAN FRANCISCO—A coroner’s
autopsy disclosed Wednesday that
lightweight Harry Campbell, one
of the nation’s most promising pro
boxers, died of a massive brain
damage—much more severe than
could be expected to result from
one professional fight.
Coroner Henry W. Turkel de
clared a further examination
would be made to ascertain
whether an underlying disorder
was to blame for the death Tues
day night of the 1960 U. S. Olym
pics boxer from Detroit.
Autopsy Discloses
“The autopsy disclosed a mas
sive blood clot on the brain and
within the brain,” Dr. Turkel said
in a statement. “There also were
many bruises of the brain sub
stance.
“The amount of bleeding- and
bruises seemed out of proportion
to what we would expect to result
from a professional fight.
“We therefore are going to
study the brain in detail under
of competing in the 1964 Olympics,
Danny has set 59 feet as his mark
to reach for next season.
“I want to get 56 feet by the
end of this season, though,” Danny
remarked.
There is one person in the con
ference other than Coach Thomas
who thinks that Danny will break
all the records and that is the pres
ent SWC record holder in the shot
and discus,. John Fry from Baylor.
Fry stated in Houston Saturday:
“Danny Roberts will break all
the records the next three years.
Left-handed.”

Campbell, 23, was knocked down
twice in the tenth round by A1
Medrano of Sacramento. The final
bell saved him from a knockout.
He collapsed in his corner and
never regained consciousness.
A three-hour brain operation
was performed Tuesday.
Douglas Hayden of the Califor
nia Athletic Commission said there
was no criticism of referee Verne
Bybee or any official connected
with the bout.
Dr. Don Lastreto, physician for
the commission, said Campbell’s
fatal injury appeared to be the
result of an accumulation of blows.
Campbell’s death was the first
in United States pro boxing this
year.
Bybee declared he didn’t realize
Campbell was badly hurt until a
stretcher was ordered after the
bout.

west Conference. In order for
lettermen in minor sports like
swimming, golf and tennis to be
come members of the association,
they must win the conference in
their various sports.
Broaddus is a fifth year man
in football as he was redshirted
his sophomore year. He hails from
Caldwell.
J. B. Carroll, the Fish baseball
coach from College Station, was
the past president.
In the vice-president position is
John Burton, who was the third
sacker on the Aggie squad this
spring. Burton is from Henderson.
Wayne Freiling, guard on the
football team from San Antonio, Aggies with five goals.
