Bryan Set For Armed Forces Day
President Kennedy has pro
claimed May 13th through May
21st as Armed Forces Week, with
Armed Forces Day May 20th. Most
of the open houses, parades, ex
hibits and ceremonies will take
place on this day.
The Bryan-College Station area
is no exception, and the Chamber
of Commerce is sponsoring the
activities again this year. Lt. Col.
Ward H. McDonald has been ap
pointed to assist the Chamber in
planning the ceremonies.
Saturday morning, the cere
monies will get under way with a

parade through downtown Bryan
starting at 10:30 a.m. The Parade
Marshall is Brig. Gen. Clifford M.
Simmang, Commander of the 420th
Engineer Brigade of Bryan. Units
to march in the parade are the
Texas A&M “fish” Drill Team,
local dignitaries, 386th Engineer
Battalion of the Texas National
Guard, the 420th Engineer Brigade
and the 4th Howitzer Battalion,
1st Battle Group, 385th Infantry.
In the afternoon, the Armed
Forces will man exhibits in Sue
Haswell Park with Maj. Perry of
the National Guard in Bryan in
charge.
Some of the new items of equip
ment the Armed Forces have de
veloped during the past year are
the Army’s airborne SS-11 guided
missile, that speeds after its target
with unerring accuracy; the Persh
ing Missile, a two-stage solid fuel
intermediate range weapon, and
the Air Force’s B-70 Valkyrie
bomber, which will fly at three
times the speed of sound. The
Marines have also been busy mak
ing changes—Marine infantrymen
carry the new M-14 rifle, ride the,
deadly-looking Ontos anti-tank ve
hicle and fly the tiny one-man
YRON-1 helicopter.
