THE BATTALION
Best Field In SWC History
Expected In Houston May 12
Special To The Battalion
DALLAS, May 9—The printers
can look forward to a lot of over
time work, if the Southwest Con
ference track and field meet in
Houston is blessed with good wea
ther, May 12 and 13.
Seven existing records have been
bettered this season and another
equalled by what appears, to be
the best field in the league’s his
tory. One other mark has been
surpassed and two others tied in
wind-aided performances.
Standards have been surpassed
in the shot put, discus throw, jav
elin throw, pole vault, 880-yard
run, the two-mile run, the one-mile
relay and the 220-yard dash with
an assisting wind. Three perform
ers—John Fry and Buddy Tyner
of Baylor and Jim Allison of Tex
as—have bettered the shot put
standard of 55-5 ^ set in 1953 by
Darrow Hooper of A&M.
Fry has hit 58-10% and has sur
passed Hooper’s mark eight times
outdoors. Fry also has bettered
Hooper’s discus record of 170 feet
by TVs inches.
Dexter Elkins of SMU, one of
six conference record-holders com
peting in the meet again this year,
has vaulted 15 feet plus on two
occasions. His peak was 15 feet,
% inch, 7% inches better than the
record he set last year.
The 880-yard record of 1:51.6
has been bettered twice by Charles
Draper of Texas Tgch, the last
time in 1:50.6 when he outran
SMU’s Jim Parr, his chief rival
in the event.
Jan Ahlberg of SMU, who set
the two-mile mark of 9:18.7 as a
sophomore in 1959 is a mighty
good bet to break the record. His
career best of 9:00.8 was made
just a week ago in the Drake' Re
lays.
Although Baylor Ras bettered
the mile relay record with a 3:10.9
performance, the Bears have not
won the event a single time this
season. The league record is
3:11.6 and is in jeopardy with the
event loaded with so many good
combines.
Ray Cunningham, holder of the
high hurdte record and co-holder
of the low hurdle mark, has
equalled the latter (22.6) without
wind and warmed up Friday night
for the highs with a record-tying,
Avind-aided 13.8. Ralph Alspaugh
of Texas, who set a 9.4 mark for
the 100 last year, bettered the 220
standard with a wind-aided 20.4
Friday, while Baylor’s Bill Kemp
tied the century standard with
very little breeze stirriflg.
Baylor looms as a slight favorite
to repeat as -champion on the
basis of full-season performances.
