SPORTS Stuffy Davis leading regular with .375 New ‘Moon Shot’ Experiment Proving Successful for Wally A&M’s season record now stands at 10-5-1 and the conference rec ord is 2-3-1. Rice has proven to be the downfall of the Cadets in the loss column since all the con ference games that have been lost were to the Owls. The biggest factor in all of the Aggie wins this season has been their ability at the plate, but in the last few games the hitting has been fading. Before the double header with Rice last weekend the team was hitting .269, but this week the average has fallen to .256. The hitting “slump” has shown up in the top of the batting order as the top four men’s average dropped. Mike Spence is still the top man at the plate for the Aggies with an average of .400. Since he is a pitcher, Spence has only played in eight games, but his average before the Rice game was .571. Clifford (Stuffy) Davis moved into the number one position of the regulars this week with a .375 average . However, his previous average was .382. Dick Hickerson, who has been the leading hitter for many weeks, dropped his average from .389 to .361 for a third place. Byron Barber’s average went from a .328 to a .304. Barber is still the leading round-trip hitter for the Aggies with five. The only man to join the “.300 ranks” after the last games was Ray hall who spoils a .319 aver age. Next weekend the Aggies will return to Kyle Field as they meet Southern Methodist University at 3 Friday afternoon and at 2:30 Saturday. Intramurals Intramural sports had only seven games played yesterday in two leagues. In the only game played in Class B Softball, Sq. 5 managed to win over F-l in a high scoring affairs, 17-15. In Class B Tennis, F-l downed Sq. 9 by the score of 2-1; Sq. 4 edged D-l to win, 2-1; Sq. 6 slipped past C-l, 2-1; Sq. 14 won over L-2 by forfeit; and 1-2 blanked K-2 by the score of 3-0. Freshmen To Try For Eighth Victory By LARRY SMITH The “winning kids”—the Fish baseball squad—go after their eighth consecutive win on Kyle Field next Tuesday, Apr. 25, as they take on Wharton Junior Col lege. According to Fish Coach J. B. Carroll, the secret of his boys’ winning way is their competitive spirit. “They just don’t know what losing is,” he said. When the chips are down, the Fish seem to come up with the sparkling play or the winning ral ly. They came from behind against Rice last Saturday to down them, 8-6. Little Known on Wharton All that is known about Whar ton is that they were beaten by Allen Academy, 2-1, said Carroll. The Fish have defeated Allen three times this season, but the Ram blers always gave the Fish a battle before going down to defeat. One of the major assets of the freshman team is their pitching strength. They have six very re liable hurlers who will without a doubt help the Aggies next spring, Six Top Pitchsrs These six are Chuck MoQuire, who also plays basketball and hails from Dallas; Johnny Crain; from Bellaire; Jerry Gramly, the hustler J from Dallas; Richard Beller, from Victoria; Rufus Lyne, who hails from George West; and Joell Ro chelle, the 6-4, 180 pounder from San Antonio. After the Wharton game, the Fish will make up the Texas Short horn contest that was postponed Mar. 17 because of rain. The Texas game will be on Kyle Field, Wednesday May 3. “These boys are really looking forward to the Shorthorn game and I’m sure they will play their best against them,” said Carroll, The only game that last year's Fish team lost was to the Short horns. By Associated Press Any day now they’ll be calling sliced home runs over the left field screen in the Los Angeles Coliseum “moon-shots.” That’s because the Dodgers’ southpaw swinging Wally Moon appears to have perfected the art of dumping fly balls for homers in that sector. Moon has hit six home runs in eight games, all over the Coli seum’s 42-foot-high left field screen, only 251 feet from home plate. The Dodger outfielder, an “Sports Car Center ,, Dealers for Renault-Peugeot & British Motor Cars Sales—Parts—Service j“We Service All Foreign Cars”. ■ 1416 Texas Ave. TA 2-4517 honor student at Texas A&M some years ago, claims a newly per fected “reverse english” swing has been largely responsible for his sudden rash of homers. In any event, Wally struck; two of those “moon-shots” Wednesday night to lead the Dodgers to a 7-2 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. The first homer came with two on in the first inning. The second was a solo flight in the fourth. He walked in the sixth and slashed a run-scoring single— to center—in the seventh to ac count for five runs batted in with a perfect evening at the plate. Cincinnati made it two straight over San Francisco with a 4-2 tri umph and retained first place in the National League. Pittsburgh climbed into second place with a 4-1 victory over Chicago. Rain stopped Milwaukee and Philadel phia for the second straight day.
