Page. 4 College Station, Texas Thursday, April 4, 1961 THE BATTALION ‘The Rivals’ Opens Monday By TOMMY HOLBEIN “The Rivals,” an internationally famous comedy written by the fa mous British playrite, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, will go on stage in Guion Hall starting next Mon day evening and playing through Friday night. Filled with fun and intrigue, the | popular play is a comedy of man ners polking fun at many facets of pomp and proper English life of the 18th Century. It was first performed in 1775 in Covent Gardens, London, Eng land, and has been hailed as one of the most famous plays written during this period. NOW A TRADITION Graphics Contest Set For Students The annual A&M Engineering Graphics Competition will be held here Apr. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 315, of the Engineering Building. It will be a continuation of con tests held for drawing students since the mid-1930’s, said Ralph H. Davey, Jr., assistant professor of engineering graphics. This year’s contest, as in the past, will be four classes covering: A Working Drawing; Descriptive Geometry Problems; Freehand Let tering, and Freehand Drawing. Any student currently enrolled in an engineering graphics course and who has not participated in a previous drawing contest since he entered the College is eligible to compete. Full sets of rules have been post ed on the Engineering Graphics Depai’tment bulletin boards. In terested prospective contestants may contact their graphics instruc tors for additional information. : Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in Each class. ; A search of the Engineering Graphics Department files indicate test originated in 1935 under Prof. Alva Mitchell, then head of the department, and Prof. Henry C. Spencer, who later succeeded Mitchell as department head. At that time the contest was for the purpose of eliminations for en tries in the National Drawing Con test held under the auspices of the Division of Engineering Drawing, Society for the promotion of En gineering Education. The entries from A&M were suc cessful through the years. During the years 1939 to 1941 inclusive, Aggies won at least six first places and three second places in var ious classes in the national contest. Certificates attesting to these awards have been located in the files. After 1941 the National Draw ing Contest was discontinued but under Prof. W. E. Street, the local contest was continued for compe tition among A&M students. How ever, due to World War II no con tests were held for several years. In the school year 1946-47 the con test was revised and has been con- that the Engineering Drawing Con- tinued without a break ever since. The Aggie Players, campus the- spian group of long standing and success, have been rehearsing the play since the start of the second semester, with lone readings being practiced during the last semester. Acting will be done in the style of the set, whcih is extremely elab orate; corresponding with the set will be background music of an 18th Gentry style.
