Speaking over a nationwide ra dio hookup from the city of Alma Ata-capital of the pioneer agri cultural Republic of Kazakhstan— the premier urged his people to work for new industrial and agri cultural triumphs in fields tang ing from tentmaking to corn pro duction. “We are happy when we build communism here but that is not enough,” he said. “We shall be happy when people of all countries stand under the banner of Marx ism-Leninism and the Communist banner flies over the whole plan et.” To a storm of applause from the leading farmers and Commu- n i s t officials of Kazakhstan, Khrushchev continued: “Opponents of communism will say that Khrushchev expresses pretentious claims for the rule of communism. It is not a claim but a deep conviction based on a pro found theory of the development of human society. It does not de pend on me or any one person.” Turning to his theme of over taking the United States, Khrush chev cited a statement by U. S. Secretary of Labor Arthur J. Gold berg that the United States and the Soviet Union are close in steel production. — - /- ' 11 : " ■ . ■ ■ THE BATTALION March 22, 1961 College Station, Texas Page 3 Architects Now Studying Research Unit Problems View Smoke Patterns Circle Model . . . architectural students Bobo, Stella watch ATTENTION AGGIES! Air flow patterns, air speeds, rain “control” and heat control surrounding a new building for the San Francisco Medical Center are subjects of study by the Archi tectural Research Group of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station at A&M. The structure is Health Sciences Instruction and Research Unit I and will be located on a restricted and hilly site on the campus of the University of California. The design, by a San Francisco firm, has been awarded a citation by Progressive Architecture in its Eighth Annual Design Awards Program, January, 1961, as an outstanding educational building. The Texas Engineering Experi ment Station researchers are seek ing to determine what future oc cupants of the building can expect of air flow in the “pocket” around the structure formed by the moun tainous terrain, what effect the overhang will have on protection from rain and what effect air flow will have on carrying off excess heat in summer though not carry ing off mechanically produced heat in winter. A model of the building with surrounding terrain is being tested in a wind tunnel simulating wind currents prevalent in the San Francisco area. A stick dipped in titanium tetrachloride is held near the structure and as the wind moves around the model, the visi ble vapors from the chemical pro vide evidence of air flow patterns. The 15-floor square building is designed with peripheral corridors, providing column-free, unobstruct ed work space in the center. The only solid portion of facade is at the front of the building and hous es the stairway and elevators. Glass sliding walls can close the cori’idors in inclement weather. It is (the glassed corridors sur rounding each floor which concern the Architectural Research Group, under the direction of Ben H. Ev ans. Such problems as admittance of fresh air while at the same time closing the corridor against rain are being studied. The concept of the building is to have an “enve lope” of air around the “core” to act as insulation, according to Evans. Reaction to the building by the Progressive Architecture jury was “carefully researched, eminently practical and workable solution, though final result tends to be a machine rather than architecture.” STRENGTHEN FORCES JFK Favoring Laos Intervention By The Associated Press WASHINGTON—President Ken nedy was reported Tuesday night as planning strong measures to bolster the military forces of the pro-Western government of Laos in its fight with Soviet-backed rebels. * At the same time the President was represented as still somewhat hopeful that a diplomatic solution might yet be found for the I^feiotian crisis before the United States and the Soviet Union become more deeply involved. Kennedy conferred for 90 min utes during the afternoon with his top military advisers on the criti cal situation. It was the second such session in two days. The group at the White House includ ed Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara and Secretary of State Dean Rusk. There was no announcement of any decision. Immediately afterward Rusk re turned to the State Department and conferred with British Am bassador Sir Harold Caccia and French Ambassador Herve Al- phand. It is understood he gave them a report on U. S. planning to deal with the growing crisis in the Southeast Asian kingdom if diplomatic efforts to restore peace there proved futile.
